Following a successful 2012 campaign that saw him go 3-0 (with one no contest), lightweight up-and-comer Justin Harrington picked up his fourth win in a row this past March against Garry Winslow at ROTR 27 in quick fashion. “It was kind of quick,” said Harrington of his 57-second submission victory over Winslow. “With him I wanted to show more of what I’m about and bring a little bit more of my standing game because in my past couple of fights I’ve gotten away from what’s gotten me a lot of my wins, but he made the mistake and I had to capitalize on it.” As one of the Northwest’s top prospects, Harrington has been given an opportunity to showcase his skills in a feature bout on Saturday’s CageSport 26 event at the Emerald Queen Casino in Fife, Wash., in a rematch against Levi Peaslee of their July bout from last year

The 135-pound title picture, though, has been slightly murky, and Faber knows that all too well. With champion Dominick Cruz inching closer to two years without a fight, and now talking about being ready to return in February – which would be roughly 28 months between fights – and interim champ Renan Barao having a recent injury setback of his own, Faber has to be wondering just when he’ll get another crack at bantamweight gold

I was backstage one night at a recent UFC event, and all of my guys had already fought, so I was watching the rest of the fights from the locker room. At one point, my good friend Jacob “Stich” Duran sat down with me to watch a little of the action, as well, and we started discussing the fight that was happening. After a little bit of this, “Stitch,” who has to be one of the absolute nicest guys you will ever meet, turned around to me and said, “You see Alex, I don’t see fights like you. I see the cuts. As I watch the fight, I see where a fighter might get cut. After being a part of so many fight, I know how and where a lot of them do get cut. I see a fight from a whole different perspective. I see the whole thing from the standpoint of cuts!” Hearing “Stitch” really got me thinking on how little I actually knew about the subject

Ediane Gomes wants shot at featherweight title with Invicta FC 6 win over Brents

It seems like every time Ediane Gomes turns around, she’s dealing with a new opponent. Gomes (10-2) was supposed to meet Julia Budd at tonight’s Invicta FC 6 card. Then Charmaine Tweet stepped in for an injured Budd. And when Tweet had visa issues, she was replaced by Tamikka Brents (2-0). And to make matters just a little bit worse for tonight’s fight, the bout isn’t at featherweight – it’s at a 150-pound catchweight since Brents had such a short time to make the cut. (And even then, Brents came in at 155 pounds and the contract was adjusted to be a lightweight bout; Gomes came in a pound under the original bout agreement limit at 149 pounds at Friday’s weigh-ins.) Even before Gomes knew Brents was going to miss weight, she was unhappy fighting at 150 pounds. “I don’t want to fight at 150 pounds,” Gomes told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Talking to Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp about her organization’s first televised pay-per-view event this Saturday night, you get the sense that she can’t quite believe she’s doing this with her one-year-old company. “I’m so old school and the mindset is, you never go to pay-per-view until you’ve built that brand big and you can do those big numbers,” Knapp told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “It took me a little bit to change my mind.” More specifically, Knapp said, it took “a good deal,” one that wouldn’t cost significantly more than what she already was paying to put her all-female fight cards out via internet streams. “And also, you know what? This card deserves it,” said Knapp. “It gives more options to fans to view it, and I figured it’s worth the risk. No expectations, just want to go out and put on a good product like we always do.” That is how this grand experiment started, by relying on both the strength of the fights and the chance to watch them for free on the Internet, where MMA fandom lives. First, it was a free online stream through Invicta’s website, then an online pay-per-view through Ustream, and now a move to televised pay-per-view, at least in North America (Invicta FC 6 still will be available via Ustream elsewhere in the world).

Included in this week’s UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas will be an event a pair of UFC elite fighters hope takes MMA to the next level. The first MMA Draft Combine takes place Saturday as part of the Expo and is an opportunity for amateur fighters to get noticed a little bit quicker. Created by UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis and current bantamweight contender and former featherweight champion Urijah Faber , MMA Draft has its own website devoted to upping the ante for amateur fighters. The UFC Fan Expo takes place Friday and Saturday in conjunction with UFC 162, which takes place Saturday at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
