After a strong start in his first three years in the UFC, Tyson Griffin struggled in his last two years with the promotion, losing four of five fights, leading to his release from the company in 2011. Griffin returned to fighting in November with a unanimous decision win over Efrain Escudero at RFA 4 with a renewed enthusiasm for fighting after some soul searching during his time off. “I took a little time off after I got cut from the UFC and took a step back and decided what I really wanted to do and where I really want to take things,” said Griffin. “I decided that I just want to have fun again with fighting.” When asked if he considered stepping away from the sport during his layoff, Griffin responded, “I don’t think I ever really thought about not fighting, I just wasn’t sure if it was really what I wanted to do because it wasn’t fun. “I got back to training and having fun again in the gym

WINNIPEG – James Krause scored $100,000 while Shawn Jordan and Sam Stout each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC 161 event. Jordan earned the “Knockout of the Night” award, Krause picked up the “Submission of the Night” bonus, and Krause and Stout each earned “Fight of the Night” honors. UFC President Dana White announced the bonuses at the night’s post-fight press conference, which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) attended. UFC 161 took at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. Fighting in Canada for the first time since a disappointing (and unentertaining) loss to Cheick Kongo at UFC 149, Jordan made a statement against Pat Barry . Wasting little time in looking to trade on the feet, Jordan rocked Barry with a pair of uppercuts before finishing him off with brutal ground-and-pound blows on the floor.

Cage Warriors Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Cathal Pendred (13-2-1) didn’t get a chance to defend his title as a result of opponent Che Mills (15-6) missing weight, but he did get to take one step closer toward his dream of fighting in the UFC. Pendred earned a third-round stoppage over Mills in the main event of Saturday’s Cage Warriors 55 card, which took place at The Helix in Dublin, Ireland. The night’s main card streamed on MMAjunkie.com. Pendred wasted little time in the opening round pushing into a clinch and looking for a takedown. Mills defended against the cage but was eventually brought to the floor. When he popped back up, Pendred tried to snatch a guillotine as he fell to his back. Mills eventually pulled free, but Pendred kept him from capitalizing on top position and quickly returned to the feet. Pendred scored another takedown late in the frame and briefly advanced to mount
