UFC fighter pay has been a hot topic recently with some people saying fighters aren’t paid enough, while other say that the company’s compensation strategy is fair. The talk got so heated at one point that UFC president Dana White said he considered doing away with traditional Fight of the Night and discretionary locker room bonuses. He recently confirmed, however, that after talking with fighters the UFC would continue its current pay structure, including bonuses. “We’re not doing away with the Fight of the Night bonuses,” White declared . “After I said (we might end the bonuses), we had a lot of feedback from fighters and fighters want the finish bonuses. They want the finish bonuses and fighters want the discretionary bonuses to stay the same.” One fighter that is surely happy to hear that is Chan Sung Jung, the Korean Zombie .

I was backstage one night at a recent UFC event, and all of my guys had already fought, so I was watching the rest of the fights from the locker room. At one point, my good friend Jacob “Stich” Duran sat down with me to watch a little of the action, as well, and we started discussing the fight that was happening. After a little bit of this, “Stitch,” who has to be one of the absolute nicest guys you will ever meet, turned around to me and said, “You see Alex, I don’t see fights like you. I see the cuts. As I watch the fight, I see where a fighter might get cut. After being a part of so many fight, I know how and where a lot of them do get cut. I see a fight from a whole different perspective. I see the whole thing from the standpoint of cuts!” Hearing “Stitch” really got me thinking on how little I actually knew about the subject

How much people make, no matter their profession, is almost always a topic of contention. Nobody ever makes enough, and everybody could always use a little more. The UFC is no different. UFC fighter pay has been one of the hottest topics around for quite some time, but has been rekindled recently, especially with UFC veterans like Jon Fitch and Jacob Volkmann publicly discussing the matter. The discussion hit a fever pitch that had UFC president Dana White considering doing away with the promotion’s traditional “Fight of the Night” and discretionary or “locker room” bonuses. The bonuses are typically issued on the basis of performance for fighters that UFC officials felt had an entertaining or heartfelt fight or particularly exciting finish.

Several past and present UFC fighters made quite a stir recently when they started raising some gripes about how much money they make to fight. And then UFC President Dana White made a bigger stir when he said, in essence, that if fighters don’t like how much money they’re making, the UFC could raise the fight purses for the guys on the lower end of the pay scale – and eliminate the fight-night bonuses and discretionary “locker room” bonuses that are handed out. Problem solved, White said he and the UFC brass had theorized. Nothing was made official, however – it was merely an idea that White floated to the media . And the fighters responded, apparently. White on Tuesday, as part of a media conference call in support of this month’s UFC on FOX 8 event, said the fight-night bonuses and discretionary bonuses won’t be going away – so fighters can rest easy. “At the last press conference (at UFC 162), I told the press we’re not doing away with the fight-night bonuses,” White said on Tuesday’s call.

The worst part is right before it starts. UFC bantamweight Vaughan Lee is in the locker room, trying to stay calm. His adrenaline is in check. His blood pressure has not yet skyrocketed. This is no accident.
