Watch Nassau County honor UFC champ with ‘Chris Weidman Day’ today at 2 p.m. ET

New York’s Nassau County in Long Island will honor recently crowned UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman with a ceremony today at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT). You can watch a live stream of the event, in which July 17 will be declared “Chris Weidman Day.” Today’s ceremony takes place at Long Island’s Coral House. County executive Edward Mangano and other officials will be on hand for the festivities. The ceremony follows Weidman’s July 6 upset of longtime titleholder Anderson Silva at UFC 162. In the pay-per-view headliner, Weidman capitalized on Silva’s taunting and clowning after connecting on a fight-altering left hook early in the second round. It halted Silva’s 17-fight win streak and string of 10 consecutive UFC title defenses.

The UFC sent out an e-mail Monday with quotes from 18 of its most well-known fighters, all of whom mostly agreed on two things: Middleweight champion Anderson Silva is probably the best fighter in MMA history, and he’s about to get beat up by a guy from Long Island with nine pro fights to his credit. For nearly seven years, Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC) has enjoyed an uninterrupted reign atop the UFC’s middleweight division. He also has made occasional forays up to the light heavyweight class, where he embarrassed one former champion and toyed with other opponents like a house cat dissecting a dragonfly. But Silva is 38. It might have been a relatively slow news week in MMA, but with a UFC middleweight title fight looming and a mind-blowingly rad video of the behind-the-scenes madness from Nick Diaz ‘s WAR MMA making the Internet rounds, there’s still plenty to talk about in this week’s Twitter Mailbag. You can direct your own question to @BenFowlkesMMA on Twitter, or you can go old school and jot it down in a message in a bottle instead. Just saying though, I live in a land-locked state. * * * * Depends how he loses. If, say, Chris Weidman falls down on a spinning backfist attempt and gets finished seconds later, sure, maybe we’ll write that one off as a valuable learning experience. But if Anderson Silva goes into full Jedi mode and knocks him out while the two of them are standing toe-to-toe, that will probably become Exhibit Y in Silva’s ongoing argument for greatest of all time. What I’m more interested in is what the story will be if Weidman wins. Will MMA fans jump on his bandwagon and tow it all the way back to Long Island
