Two UFC 309 fighters withdraw in week prior to Madison Square Garden event

Two fighters have withdrawn from UFC 309 less than two weeks before the event. Light heavyweight Azamat Murzakanov and featherweight Lucas Almeida are out of their respective Nov. 16 bouts that were scheduled for Madison Square Garden in New York. Four people with knowledge of the changes recently informed MMA Junkie of them but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Murzakanov (30-9 MMA, 11-7 UFC) was expected to fight Nikita Krylov (14-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) in a UFC-ranked battle, but withdrew for undisclosed reasons. It is unclear if Krylov will remain on the card.

LAS VEGAS – Lucas Almeida ’s two fight losing streak came to an end this past Saturday. The Brazilian featherweight defeated Timmy Cuamba (8-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) by unanimous decision on the main card of UFC on ESPN 58 at the UFC Apex. Almeida (15-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) entered the bout with a lot of pressure on his shoulders, but he was able to handle it just fine due to the work his done on improving his mental fortitude. “After my last two fights, my coach mentioned that I wasn’t making mistakes in my training,” Almeida said at the UFC on ESPN 58 post-fight press conference. “The training was the same, it was mentally that I needed to change. “I went back to (my psychotherapist) and we did a wonderful job to strengthen me up mentally and also to bring my family close to church, which helped us a lot and strengthened all of us

Two UFC Fight Night 226 bouts fall through days out from Paris event

It’s UFC Fight Night 226 fight week, and the promotion is seeking two last-minute replacements. The event, which takes place Saturday at Accor Arena in Paris and streams on ESPN+, is down a featherweight and a bantamweight as Lucas Almeida and Muin Gafurov are out of their respective bouts. Almeida (14-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) announced Monday on Instagram his withdrawal from his bout vs. France’s William Gomis (12-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC), which was scheduled to be one of six main-card bouts. The announcement came one day after Gafurov (18-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC) withdrew from his bout against France’s Taylor Lapilus (18-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) due to visa issues, according to multiple French news outlets, including La Sueur .

Following Saturday’s UFC Vegas 56 fight card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, the fight promotion announced the recipients of the performance-based bonuses. Fight Of The Night: Lucas Almeida made quite the impression during his UFC debut matchup against featherweight Michael Trizano. It was a back-and-forth battle with Almeida throwing kicks in the first round, and Trizano striking back with a hook that sent the Brazilian stumbling. The two went to work in the second round, with the blood piling on to both fighters. 55 seconds into the final round the referee stopped the fight after Almeida continued to lay the punches onto Trizano. Not a bad way to start your UFC career.
