Kyoji Horiguchi will return in search of his first win of 2022. The former Bellator titleholder and current Rizin champion has been booked to return to the ring. Horiguchi (29-5) is set to take on Yuto Hokamura (14-11-2) in a bantamweight bout at Rizin 38, which is scheduled for Sept. 25 at Saitama Super Arena in Japan

Things didn’t work out as originally planned for Rizin FF, but the Japanese promotion’s New Year’s Eve spectacular at the Saitama Super Arena will still finish with a wild scrap for their bantamweight title. Rizin FF 20 was all set to feature the hotly-anticipated rematch between Kyoji Horiguchi and the man who shocked the MMA world when he finished the two-promotion bantamweight champion in their non-title meeting at Rizin FF 18 in October, Kai Asakura . Asakura’s 68-second demolition of Horiguchi in Nagoya stunned the Japanese MMA community, and when Asakura (14-1, 6-0 Rizin FF) repeated the trick with a 54-second knockout of Ulka Sasaki at Rizin 19 that left the former UFC fighter with a broken jaw, it was clear that the 26-year-old was the undeniable number-one contender for Horiguchi’s title. Everything seemed set for an end-of-year showdown in Saitama, but disaster struck in November when news emerged that Horiguchi had sustained a knee injury that would require surgery and an estimated layoff of around 10 months. But, in an honorable move from the American Top Team man, Horiguchi decided to relinquish his Rizin and Bellator bantamweight titles to free up the belts and allow Rizin to book an alternative title fight for New Year’s Eve

The big Czech showcased his knockout power on a night packed with first-round finishes as he dismantled the experienced Maldonado (25-14 MMA, 0-1 Rizin) inside the opening frame of their 220-pound catchweight contest in Osaka, Japan. Prochazka (25-3-1 MMA, 10-1 Rizin) spent the opening minute of the contest range-finding with his jab and assessing Maldonado’s willingness to step into the pocket

Japanese promotion Rizin FF has announced its tournament lineup for a lightweight grand prix, with perennial Bellator contender Patricky Freire set to be featured in it. On Wednesday, Rizin FF officials announced the eight participants in the upcoming tournament, which kicks off at October 12 at Rizin FF 19. The eight-man field includes: Patricky “Pitbull” Freire (21-8 MMA, 0-0 Rizin) Johnny Case (26-6 MMA, 2-0 Rizin) Luiz Gustavo (9-1 MMA, 1-1 Rizin) Tatsuya Kawajiri (37-13 MMA, 2-3 Rizin) Tofiq Musaev (15-3 MMA, 2-0 Rizin) Roberto de Souza (9-0 MMA, 2-0 Rizin) Damien Brown (19-12 MMA, 2-0 Rizin) Hiroto Uesako (16-7 MMA, 1-0 Rizin) The quarterfinals are set to take place on the Rizin FF 19 card.

Fighting in the land that made Wanderlei Silva a legend, his prize pupil Luiz Gustavo (9-0) remained unbeaten with a devastating stoppage of Yusuke Yachi (20-7). The contest served as the main event of Sunday’s Rizin FF 12 event, which streamed via online pay-per-view from Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan. Gustavo found early success with his aggression, punching away and driving forward before pushing inside and bringing his foe to the canvas. Yachi battled his way back to the feet and actually reversed the position, sliding around to his opponent’s back and looking to control. However, Gustavo wouldn’t stay there, working his way free and resuming his striking attack, where he seemed to control the action until the end of the frame.
