UFC president Dana White was a guest on Wednesday night’s edition of Fox Sports Live, where he unveiled news of Lyoto Machida’s drop to middleweight and received another plea from Chael Sonnen for a fight with Wanderlei Silva . White also, however, defended his friend, Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod is a Major League Baseball player for the New York Yankees, but is currently garnering attention for his alleged role in the Biogenesis performance enhancing drug scandal and subsequent 211-game suspension. There has been a major scandal brewing in the world of sports, once again centering on illegal performance enhancing drugs and treatments. There are claims that Biogenesis and its founder, Tony Bosch, have been providing PEDs to numerous athletes in the professional sports world. Thus far, the spotlight and accusations have focused primarily on Major League Baseball stars like Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun. The man who blew the whistle on Biogenesis, Porter Fischer, recently indicated that there are athletes from numerous other sports involved as well, specifically mentioning the NBA and mixed martial arts. There was no indication who the mixed martial artists involved were, but as with anything MMA, UFC president Dana White , at his UFC on Fox 8 post-fight scrum with reporters, was grilled about the Biogenesis scandal and the questions about what if a UFC fighter was involved. The new FOX Sports 1 cable network on Tuesday unveiled a new commercial during the Major League Baseball All-Star Game on FOX, and the UFC was prominently featured. The commercial’s theme is one of comebacks, and one of the commercial’s stars is UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre . “GSP” is shown getting the business end of a beating inside the octagon – including being taken down by his opponent, something which rarely happens to the champ. But later in the commercial, St-Pierre mounts his rally and lands a head kick to go on to the win. The commercial also features the NFL, MLB, NCAA football and basketball, NASCAR and boxing, all sports that will be part of the new FOX Sports 1 network when it launches on Aug. 17. On that launch date, the UFC will debut on the network with UFC Fight Night 26 (previously called “UFC on FOX Sports 1 1″), which features a light heavyweight main event between Chael Sonnen and Mauricio Rua from TD Garden in Boston. UFC President Dana White and former boxing heavyweight champion – and UFC fan – Mike Tyson also make an appearance in the commercial.

UFC outspent PGA, MLB, NASCAR and NBA with 2012 lobbying efforts

Only the National Football League spent more on lobbyists than the Ultimate Fighting Championship this past year on Capitol Hill. The industry-leading fight promotion shelled out $620,000, double the amount of Major League Baseball and nearly five times the National Basketball Association’s payout, according to the Center for Responsible Politics . The NFL dwarfed all major sporting organizations with $1.14 million. The UFC’s 2012 figures represent a 51 percent increase from the previous year, in which parent company Zuffa spent $410,000 in Washington, and a 158 percent increase from $240,000 in 2008, when CRP first tracked lobbying records. This year, Zuffa has spent $110,000. Records for the most recent fiscal quarter are not yet available. A pair of firms – Brownstein, Hyatt, Faber and Schreck LLP, as well as SB Consulting – represent the UFC. The promotion’s co-chief operating officer, Lawrence Epstein, told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the firms are used to educate legislators on MMA and to push for tougher anti-piracy laws that could stem financial losses from illegal streaming. In late 2011 and early 2012, the lobbyists also discussed Zuffa’s “competition policy,” filings show. Epstein said the designation refers to an anti-trust investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, which closed in January 2012. As of late, legislative turnover in both houses of Congress and fierce opposition to recent anti-piracy legislation have made changing the law a tough fight. “I think we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Epstein said. “There is a general sort of bias that has anything to do with intellectual property because of the fallout from [the Stop Online Piracy Act] and [Protect IP Act].” This past year, Zuffa took a gut punch when the controversial anti-piracy bills were shot down amid public outcry.

The UFC debuts on FOX Sports 1 next month the same day the new cable network debuts on Aug. 17. In anticipation of the UFC’s new cable home after a year and a half on FX and FUEL TV, FOX Sports 1 on Tuesday will debut a new commercial during Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game on FOX. UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre recently filmed that commercial, and now you can go behind the scenes on the set to see how things went down ahead of the spot’s Tuesday premiere. St-Pierre, who in November defends his title against Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in Las Vegas, said that while he may have plenty of success in the octagon, his acting might leave a little to be desired.
