Ex-UFC fighter Mark Munoz issues statement after report of letting kids settle dispute through boxing

Former UFC fighter Mark Munoz has been placed on administrative leave and won’t have his contract renewed as a wrestling coach at a Southern California high school after a report that he allowed students to settle a dispute by boxing each other. Munoz, 44, allegedly let two students fight each other with boxing gloves, according to a report by TMZ on Tuesday. The report, which cites “sources close to Munoz,” alleges that he wasn’t aware of the argument and thought the boxing match was more in “jovial” spirits than “violent.” One of the boys’ parents was outraged by the situation and informed the Fairmont Private Schools’ administration.

Each year, Fighters Only’s World MMA Awards have featured musical interludes featuring spoof pop videos starring some of the biggest stars of the sport as they poke fun at themselves for their peers’ entertainment during the annual black-tie get-together in Las Vegas. Before he became an MMA fighter in 2007, former UFC middleweight Mark Munoz was a collegiate wrestling national champion at Oklahoma State. But before accomplishing that feat in 2001, Munoz was just a Filipino kid from the Bay Area city of Vallejo, Calif., heading off to college in America’s heartland. As someone who’s lived in Vallejo, I can tell you it’s a rough place for a kid to grow up. Population is about 120,000, mostly black and brown folks, low-income to middle class. That’s important information as you now watch the video below and listen to Muñoz (14-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) describe his first moment getting off the plane in Oklahoma City when he was 18. Believe me, you’re going to love the part about the real-life cowboy who confused him for being “some type of Mexican” (via Twitter )

Shortly after announcing his intention to introduce a bill that would expand the powers of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act to the sport of MMA, Oklahoma congressman Markwayne Mullin found himself sitting in his office having a conversation with a UFC executive who insisted that there was no such thing as a UFC championship. “He actually said that to me,” Mullin told MMAjunkie. “He said, ‘We don’t have them fight for a championship belt. We bestow an award on an individual for the best fighter that night.’ I said, ‘See, this is exactly why we need this.’” The executive in this case was UFC COO Lawrence Epstein, who met with Mullin in April to argue against the Muhammad Ali Expansion Act that Mullin has since put forth with support from the bill’s co-sponsor, Democratic congressman Joseph Kennedy III of Massachusetts

Munoz, a notable “good guy” in a sport often sorely lacking such people, was able to go out on his terms. A proud Filipino-American, Munoz was one of the featured fighters on the UFC’s first card in the Philippines, a country where he’d long been an ambassador for the sport. Going out with a win in front of a screaming crowd while looking forward to more time to spend with his family was likely as good of an exit as Munoz could ask for. But fans of Filipino MMA don’t have to worry about Munoz abandoning the country. He is looking forward to helping the country patch one of the biggest gaps in its MMA game.
