The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission on Tuesday released the UFC Fight Night 26: Shogun vs. Sonnen fighter salaries to MMAWeekly.com. UFC light heavyweight Chael Sonnen submitted for UFC and Pride champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the night’s main event, but it was Alistair Overeem, in a loss, that topped the disclosed fighter payroll.

Chael Sonnen Will Fight at UFC Fight Night 26; Commission Votes Unanimously to Grant License

Chael Sonnen , as expected, will be fighting Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the UFC Fight Night 26 main event next week in Boston. Sonnen cleared his final hurdle on Thursday when the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission voted unanimously to license him for the fight. The decision came after the commission’s Medical Advisory Board reviewed Sonnen’s physical condition and medical information. Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., Sonnen’s manager, had told MMAWeekly.com after meeting with the commission earlier in the day that it appeared “likely” that Sonnen would be granted a license. Massachusetts Department of Public Safety spokesperson Terrel Harris on Thursday informed MMAWeekly.com of the commission’s approval. Unite Here, a faction of the Culinary Union, that has long been battling the UFC ’s continued expansion efforts, filed a complaint against Sonnen stemming from his January 2011 money laundering conviction

Following numerous hurdles, it appears that Chael Sonnen will get licensed to fight in the UFC Fight Night 26 main event slated for Aug. 17 in Boston. Sonnen is scheduled to face Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the top fight on the card, which serves as prime time launch programming for the new Fox Sports 1 network. Sonnen faced a couple of hurdles en route to the bout. For one, the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission lacked experience in dealing with therapeutic use exemptions for testosterone replacement therapy, which Sonnen says he requires for medical reasons.

Chael Sonnen apparently will be licensed to fight at UFC Fight Night 26, according to his manager. Mike Roberts of MMA Inc., which represents the fighter, today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that a closed-door meeting of the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission went in Sonnen’s favor. “They had a panel, we had a meeting with them, and as far as we know, they’re going to license him,” he said. “As far as we know, it will be just like everybody else’s license.” The decision clears the way for Sonnen to headline the event opposite Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. As of Wednesday, the three-time UFC title challenger didn’t have a license to fight . According to a prepared statement issued the same day, the MSAC preliminarily agreed to allow Sonnen to fight at the event, which takes place Aug. 17 at Boston’s TD Garden, but assembled its medical board to discuss the fighter’s use of testosterone-replacement therapy.

On Thursday, a closed-door meeting of the Massachusetts State Boxing Commission – spurred by a union complaint – will determine whether UFC fighter Chael Sonnen receives a license to fight at UFC Fight Night 26 next week. A representative for the state’s Department of Public Safety, which oversees the commission, said that following a complaint from the union, the commission elected to hold the meeting after its regular session to determine whether Sonnen is appropriately using testosterone replacement therapy. “The commissioners will sit in and they’ll hammer out the issue,” DPS spokesman Terrel Harris today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “When they’ve made a final decision, they’ll let everybody know what that decision was. Bottom line is that they have to do it relatively soon, because the fight’s a week from Saturday.” Harris believed the complaint was lodged by Unite Here, a union based in New York and Washington, D.C., and declined to reveal its contents
