This week’s Twitter Mailbag has a little of everything, from MMA’s connection to the Biogenesis scandal, to the trouble with scoring takedowns, to still more discussion of this whole Bellator pay-per-view thing. If you’ve got a question of your own, or, hey, even just a pithy observation about life, why not tweet it to @BenFowlkesMMA ? I love pithy observations. Except for when I don’t. Talking to fighters, you get a sense that they have a pretty good idea how the mind of a judge works when it comes to takedowns. Close round? A takedown in the final minute will almost invariably sway it, usually even if the takedowner does very little to the takedownee after the fight hits the mat.

UFC on Fox 8 Results: Liz Carmouche Dominates, Making Her Case for Another Shot at Ronda Rousey

When Liz Carmouche stepped into the UFC women’s bantamweight championship bout opposite titleholder Ronda Rousey at UFC 157, many people believed she hadn’t yet earned her position as title challenger. She nearly caught Rousey in a submission that night. If that weren’t enough to make believers out of her doubters, Carmouche’s follow-up performance at UFC on Fox 8 on Saturday night should make converts of the remaining skeptics. Carmouche stepped in the Octagon with 21-year-old Brazilian fighter Jessica Andrade in Seattle, immediately taking control. She put Andrade up against the cage early, but quickly took her to the mat, employing her harsh ground and pound attack. Carmouche looked like she might just run away with the fight, but Andrade someone regained her feet late in the round and slammed Carmouche to the canvas. Andrade locked on an arm-in guillotine choke and held it for the duration of the round, but Carmouche remained calm and road it out to the horn. In round two, it was all Carmouche

Legacy FC 21 Results: Leonard Garcia and Holly Holm Knockouts Highlight the Night

Matt Hobar and William “Bubba” Bush became new champions at Friday night’s Legacy FC 21 at the Arena Theater in Houston, but it was UFC veteran Leonard Garcia and world champion boxer Holly Holm that stole much of the night’s thunder. Hobar dominated his fight with Angel Huerta in the night’s main event, taking the fight to him. It didn’t take Hobar long to put Huerta on the mat and transition to his back, securing a fight-ending and title-winning rear naked choke. The victory put the Legacy bantamweight belt firmly around Hobar’s waist. Bush gave Larry Crowe little chance of becoming the promotion’s middleweight champion, putting him on the mat a couple of times in the first round.

Ref Herb Dean was unsure if Anderson Silva was faking or unconscious at UFC 162

Veteran referee Herb Dean had refereed four Anderson Silva fights prior to UFC 162 and seen others cageside. So when Silva began to clown Chris Weidman in the main event of this past Saturday’s pay-per-view, he did little else but pay close attention. Dean couldn’t hear what, if anything, “The Spider” was saying when he gesticulated at Weidman in the middle of exchanges. “I didn’t have any problem with it,” Dean told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “If that’s what he wanted to do. Everybody is in there for their own reasons, and he’s in there to do something great, and he challenges himself to be able to do his antics while he’s right there in the danger zone, and he was doing his thing.” Unfortunately for Silva, that led to a different result than any of the other times he stepped into the octagon and toyed with his opponents. For the first time in his octagon career, his antics caught up to him when Weidman landed a left hook that sent him crashing to the mat.

UFC 162 results/photos: Edson Barboza stops Rafaello Oliveira with leg kicks

LAS VEGAS – After taking a half-dozen vicious kicks to the body and legs, Rafaello Oliveira knew he needed to get Edson Barboza to the mat. Unfortunately for him, Barboza was in no mood to grapple. By the second round, he could no longer stand, and Barboza took home the TKO. The lightweight bout was part of today’s UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view. The fight’s stoppage came at the 1:44 of the second frame, though it might have ended at the end of the first, when Oliveira’s leg began to bleed from over 20 of Barboza’s kicks. In the opening frame, Barboza might even have landed the wheel kick that knocked out Terry Etim at UFC 142 (and earned him an ESPY nomination) had Oliveira not slightly ducked. The move wasn’t enough to save him, however, from the onslaught of shins to his body and lead leg.

RFA 8 Results: Sergio Pettis and Lance Palmer Become Champions, Remain Undefeated

Resurrection Fighting Alliance 8 took place Friday night at The Rave/Eagles Club in Milwaukee with rising talents Sergio Pettis and Lance Palmer keeping their unblemished records intact. Pettis wasted no time taking the fight to late-replacement Dillard “Joe” Pegg, who didn’t hesitate to engage. Less than a minute into their fight, however, Pettis landed a straight right hand to Pegg’s jaw, dropping him to the mat. Pettis swarmed and unleashed a few right hands, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight. The victory puts the RFA flyweight belt around Pettis’ waist, but the UFC has a still-developing 125-pound division that would benefit from the addition of a fighter of his caliber. It wouldn’t be surprising at all if Sergio soon joins older brother Anthony on the UFC roster. It may have seemed a little odd that then-champion Jared Downing entered his featherweight title defense against Lance Palmer as a heavy underdog, but that was exactly where he found himself

Bellator 96 Results: King Mo Lawal Moves into Tourney Finals; Babalu Sobral Retires

Bellator 96 took place at the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., on Wednesday night, setting the finals for both the promotion’s light heavyweight and heavyweight Summer Series tournaments. Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal avenged an early exit from the Season 9 tournament by making quick work of Seth Petruzelli in the Bellator 96 main event. An accidental headbutt stalled the fight in the opening moments, but when action picked up, Petruzelli tried to chop Lawal’s legs out from under him with low kicks. Lawal, however, caught one of the kicks and planted Petruzelli back down on the mat. Lawal stood up, timed his move, and dove in with a punch that put Petruzelli’s lights out… one punch, no muss, no fuss.
