NEWARK, N.J. – Randy Brown didn’t exactly blow away the competition in his UFC debut, but when pushed to the limit by Matt Dwyer , the much-hyped prospect did just enough to win in a very close fight. After getting off to a slow start, Brown (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) put together two strong rounds to close the fight, defeating Dwyer (8-4 MMA, 1-3 UFC) by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28). The welterweight bout closed out the UFC Fight Pass-streamed preliminary card of today’s UFC on FOX 18 event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Subsequent bouts aired on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. Brown seemed to have trouble finding his comfort zone in the opening round, as Dwyer disrupted his timing and negated the height and reach advantage Brown normally has over other welterweights.

Nine fighters, including co-headliners Tony Ferguson and Josh Thomson , are facing potential six-month medical suspensions following UFC Fight Night 71. MMAjunkie recently requested and received the list of mandatory medical suspensions from the California State Athletic Commission. UFC Fight Fight Night 71 took place this past Wednesday, June 15, at San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center. Following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass, the rest of the card aired on FOX Sports 1. In the headliner, heavyweight Frank Mir (18-9 MMA, 16-9 UFC), who received only the minimum seven-day suspension issued to all fighters, needed just 73 seconds to knock out Todd Duffee (9-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC), who’s suspended 45 days with no contact permitted during training sessions for 30 days.

Frank Mir and Todd Duffee SAN DIEGO – Frank Mir , Tony Ferguson , Alan Jouban and Matt Dwyer each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Wednesday night’s UFC Fight Night 71. The four fighters took home $50,000 a piece with Mir and Ferguson winning “Performance of the Night” bonuses and Jouban and Dwyer winning “Fight of the Night.” Mir (18-9 MMA, 16-9 UFC) engaged in a rollicking heavyweight slugfest with Todd Duffee (9-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in the main event of the evening. With both men swinging wildly with power punches, it was Mir who landed the crushing shot that left Duffee face down on the canvas at just 1:13 of the first round. Ferguson (19-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) picked up arguably the biggest win of his young career, roughing up – and cutting up – veteran lightweight Josh Thomson (20-8 MMA, 3-4 UFC) in the evening’s co-main event. Ferguson took the decision by scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26. Jouban (12-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) was able to outlast Dwyer (8-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in a back-and-forth welterweight fight.

Alan Jouban SAN DIEGO – Alan Jouban got dropped, dropped Matt Dwyer in return, lost a point for an illegal knee, and successfully pulled off a cartwheel kick. Somehow he did it all in just three rounds of action, and in the end Jouban (12-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) was rewarded with a unanimous decision victory (29-27, 29-27, 29-27) over Dwyer (8-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) following a gutsy effort from both men. The welterweight bout opened the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 71 event at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. This fight got wild early on, and stayed that way almost for the full 15 minutes. It started when Dwyer dropped Jouban with a right hand early on in the first, only to have Jouban rally back later in the round, putting Dwyer down before getting a little carried away and firing off a knee to Dwyer’s head while he had one knee on the mat
