UFC parts ways with Maki Pitolo, three other fighters

Four more fighters have parted ways with the UFC. Multiple people with knowledge of the situation recently informed MMA Junkie of the roster moves but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion hasn’t made official announcements. Check out the recent UFC departures below. The roster moves, unless explicitly noted, are not necessarily a “release.” The UFC may have elected not to re-sign certain fighters who were at the end of their contracts.

Jared Gordon vs. Matt Sayles booked for UFC San Diego

Another lightweight bout is on tap for UFC San Diego. Jared Gordon vs. Matt Sayles is the latest addition to the promotion’s return to California, multiple persons with knowledge of the matchup told MMA Junkie on Sunday. UFC San Diego is scheduled to take place May 16 at Pechanga Arena

OTTAWA, Ontario – For Matt Sayles , UFC on ESPN+ 9 was more than just an ordinary fight. Sure, his third-round victory over Kyle Nelson at Canadian Tire Centre was a nifty finish and a great way to get back in the win column after losing his UFC debut. But in the time since that loss, to Sheymon Moraes at UFC 227, the 25-year-old out of San Diego’s Alliance MMA had a much bigger battle to fight. His brother, Steven, was shot and nearly killed. Steven Sayles is homeless and dealing with addiction, and Matt wants his brother to know he’s still thinking about him. “Sadly, my brother is homeless, struggles with addiction, a lot of my family has before,” Sayles said. “And he actually was shot and almost lost his life on the streets, so dealing with that coming off a loss in my last fight, it was tough to see him go through that, so I was glad to get the ‘W.’” And while Steven is still dealing with his issues, Matt hopes to be able to use his platform as a fighter in order to show there’s something to be said for staying on the straight and narrow

While there wasn’t necessarily one big name drawing everyone’s attention at Dana White’s Contender Series 10, there certainly were quite a few names you’ll want to learn. This past Tuesday, Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series returned to The Ultimate Fighter Gym in Las Vegas, and the UFC boss wound up awarding a record four UFC contracts on the night. Included among those were headliner Matt Sayles (7-1), who picked up an impressive first-round TKO win over a previously unbeaten Yazan Hajeh (6-1). Dana White’s Contender Series broadcaster and former UFC champion Michael Bisping liked what he saw from the performance.

Dana White’s Contender Series 10 took place Tuesday in Las Vegas, and we’re grading the winners from the five-fight card, which streamed on UFC Fight Pass from The Ultimate Fighter Gym in Las Vegas. With a refreshing but digestible format that has fans of the sport responding, this series has shown to have legs beyond its summer seasons while serving as a crockpot for contenders whom the UFC matchmakers can use for future events. With that trend in mind, I’ve decided to take a look at the winning fighters regardless of whether or not they won a UFC contract while grading their performances in regards to their probability of returning to a UFC stage. And with this most recent show setting a record in rewarded contracts, I also touch on the prospects of each winner’s ventures into his respective division. * * * * * Dwight Grant Weight class : Welterweight Result : Dwight Grant def. Tyler Hill by second-round knockout Grade : B Summary : It’s admittedly hard to not want to give a guy an A for going out there and finishing his opponent in a high-pressure situation, but given the gamut of possible outcomes and performances, I believe this is a somewhat generous grade.

LAS VEGAS – Although there are no givens with Dana White’s Contender Series, a first-round TKO win to close out the evening is the type of result that would usually give a fighter at least some measure of ease when it comes to getting a UFC contract. On Tuesday at Dana White’s Contender Series 10, though, the event offered a bit of a problem. By the time Matt Sayles (7-1) and his right hand had dispatched previously unbeaten Hazan Hajeh (6-1) in a welterweight headliner, four other fighters had already scored big finishes of their own. That made for a great night for the fans but, the fact that contracts had typically been given to no more than two fighters a night could have been cause for concern for any of the night’s contestants. Not for Sayles, apparently.
