In an attempt to trim a bloated roster of well over 500 fighters, UFC officials have gone on a recent firing spree, releasing well over a dozen fighters with many more said to be on the way. Former UFC lightweight Christos Giagos told fans via Instragram that he’d been cut because the UFC was “overbooked.” Other fighters who haven’t fought in six months or more told MMAjunkie that UFC officials explained their releases as the inevitable consequence of a grim numbers game. Marcus Brimage It appears the UFC has initiated a fairly substantial trimming of its roster. On Friday, “The Ultimate Fighter 19” Eddie Gordon announced the UFC has cut him . Soon after, a number of other fighters confirmed they, too, received their walking papers. And it sounds like far more could be on the way. Brimage (7-5 MMA, 4-4 UFC), a quarterfinalist on “TUF 14,” won his first three UFC fights, defeating notables such as Maximo Blanco and Jimy Hettes in the process.

Matt Van Buren (6-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) and promotional newcomer Jonathan Wilson (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) have agreed to meet at UFC Fight Night 74. UFC officials announced the new fight booking today. UFC Fight Night 74 takes place Aug. 8 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville and is the promotion’s first visit there since January 2012. The main card airs on FOX Sports 1.

UFC Fight Night 59 medical suspensions: Five get half-year terms, Uriah Hall needs clearance

Uriah Hall UFC featherweight Conor McGregor emerged from UFC Fight Night 59 without a scratch, though his opponent is now benched for two months following a second-round TKO loss. The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission, which regulated the event, today released the official medical suspensions arising from Sunday’s event, which took place at Boston’s TD Garden and aired live on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. MMAjunkie obtained the medical suspensions through a records request with the commission. In all, 13 of the fight card’s 24 competitors received suspensions from the MSAC. Five received six-month terms pending medical clearance, including main-card middleweight Uriah Hall , who needs clearance for his right knee following a first-round TKO of John Howard , who was suspended for 45 days. The full list of suspensions from UFC Fight Night 59 include: Dennis Siver : Suspended 60 days.

When UFC President Dana White jumped in between the two fighters in an attempt to make sure the situation didn’t escalate, it gave MMA fans the impression that there was more to the situation than that, according to the light heavyweight. “As a professional courtesy, I told Ryan Jimmo for my first fight, we should do something funny. I told Gian Villante in New Zealand I wanted to do something funny,” O’Connell (16-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC) said after his win at the event, which took place Sunday at TD Garden in Boston. “I told Matt Van Buren, ‘Hey, it’s kind of my thing: I like to goof around at the weigh-ins. I’m gonna do something funny.’ And he said, ‘Uhhh, uhhh, OK.’ I tried to make it an ad-libbity (tap on the nose), and everyone tries to make it a tense situation.

UFC Fight Night 59 bonuses: Of course Conor McGregor nabbed one of the $50K awards

Conor McGregor BOSTON – Four fighters each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 59 event, and you just knew Conor McGregor was going to be one of them. McGregor and Lorenz Larkin won “Performance of the Night” bonuses while Sean O’Connell and Matt Van Buren each earned “Fight of the Night” honors. UFC officials announced the winners at the post-event news conference, which MMAjunkie attended. UFC Fight Night 59 took place at Boston’s TD Garden. The main card aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. McGregor, of course, competed in the night’s main event, earning a one-sided TKO victory over Dennis Siver.
