It just so happened that on that night, all the way back at UFC 14, he took the heavyweight title from Mark Coleman. But after reflecting on that pivotal upset – and receiving his moment in the limelight this past Thursday during the UFC’s 2017 Hall of Fame induction ceremony – a reflective Smith is coming to terms with being a part of the history books. “I have mixed emotions about it, but I appreciate who recognizes my body of work, and I’m good,” he said

The industry leader added Maurice Smith , Kazushi Sakuraba , Joe Silva and Urijah Faber and as its 2017 induction class during a ceremony on Thursday at Park Theater in Las Vegas. The ceremony, hosted by UFC commentator Jon Anik, paid tribute to their accomplishments in the sport and served as part of the 2017 UFC International Fight Week. The promotion announced the new additions earlier this year, but each new hall of famer got an extensive – and often whacky – introduction. Don Frye, a 2016 inductee who’s back from a rough year of personal and health problems, got a ways off track introducing Sakuraba after spotting Miesha Tate in the audience, noting he’d bought a computer just to make her nude 2013 “ESPN the Magazine Body Issue” cover his screensaver.

As MMAjunkie first reported this past week, Smith is the second confirmed member of the 2017 class , which also features Urijah Faber. Smith (14-14 MMA, 4-3 UFC), who in 1997 became just the second man to claim the UFC heavyweight title, is the 13th fighter to join the Pioneer wing of the hall of fame. He’ll be inducted on July 6 during UFC International Fight Week festivities in Las Vegas. The 55-year-old was a decorated kickboxer even before entering the UFC octagon.
