ONE Championship kicked off the promotion’s 2022 schedule on Friday in Singapore, and strawweight champ Jing Nan Xiong was able to retain her belt, while lightweight prospect Saygid Izagakhmaev announced his arrival to the promotion in emphatic fashion. The action took place in the featured bouts of “ ONE Championship: Heavy Hitters ,” which streamed on B/R Live from Singapore Indoor Stadium. Xiong (17-2) was dominant in the main event, outstriking grappling specialist Ayaka Miura (11-4) over the course of five rounds and cruising to a unanimous decision to notch the sixth consecutive defense of her strawweight belt. The first ONE Championship show of the year is in the books, and Jing Nan Xiong still is champion. Xiong (17-2) retained her women’s strawweight title with a unanimous decision over Ayaka Miura (11-4) in the main event. It was Xiong’s sixth successful defense of the belt. ONE Championship: Heavy Hitters took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium. Miura hoped to take the fight to the canvas against the champ, but Xiong’s boxing and power was too strong, as was her takedown defense en route to the decision win. The 34-year-old Chinese fighter won for the third straight time and 12th time in 13 fights.

ONE Championship reveals atomweight grand prix field, with winner to challenge champ Angela Lee

ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong recently revealed the eight women who will make up the field for the promotion’s upcoming atomweight grand prix, set to kick off on May 28. The international lineup includes American Alyse Anderson (5-1), China’s Meng Bo (17-5), Thailand’s Stamp Fairtex (5-1), South Korea’s Seo Hee Ham (23-8), Japan’s Itsuki Hirata (7-0), India’s Ritu Phogat (4-0), Ukraine’s Alyona Rassohyna (13-4) and the Philippines’ Denice Zamboanga (8-0). First round matchups for the tournament are expected to be announced shortly. As Sityodtong previously announced, the winner of the grand prix will challenge reigning ONE atomweight champion Angela Lee (10-2) later this year. Lee is currently on the sidelines while she and husband Bruno Pucci welcome their first child.

Japanese MMA icon Shinya Aoki reached a career milestone as the former ONE lightweight champion notched the 30th submission win of his career at “ ONE Championship 126: Unbreakable ” in Singapore. Matched against former LFA welterweight champion James Nakashima , Aoki (46-9) took charge of the bout early in the first round as, after some clinch work against the cage, “Tobikan Judan” leapt onto Nakashima’s (12-2) back before locking up a body triangle and following up with a rear-naked choke to claim the win at the 2:42 mark.

“Tobikan Judan” sees his first action of 2021 next week, when he faces MMA Lab fighter James Nakashima in Singapore in a lightweight contest. ONE Championship officials recently announced that Shinya Aoki (45-9) vs. Nakashima (12-1) will serve as the featured MMA fight at “ONE Championship 126: Unbreakable,” which takes place Jan. 22 at Singapore Indoor Stadium. As with all ONE Championship events, the card streams on B/R Live. Fighting professionally since 2003, Japan’s Aoki has competed almost exclusively in Asia for famed organizations such as PRIDE, DREAM, Shooto, DEEP and Rizin FF, though most recently he’s fought 13 times under the ONE banner, briefly holding the promotion’s lightweight title.

It didn’t take long for Meng Bo to launch her introduction to ONE Championship fans Saturday. In her long-awaited promotional debut, after having two previously scheduled fights against two-time title challenger Mei Yamaguchi scrapped, Bo (14-5) took out former title challenger Laura Balin (11-6) with relative ease in the top MMA fight at “ONE Championship 103: Age of Dragons.” Balin held her own in the opening minute of the fight, coming at Bo. But when Bo landed a big overhand right, Balin quickly dropped to the canvas.

Asia’s largest MMA promotion is back in action on Friday, as ONE Championship heads to mainland China. “ONE Championship 103: Age of Dragons” goes down at Cadillac Arena in Beijing, and will air in the United States on B/R Live. In the main event of the MMA portion of the evening’s proceedings in a multi-combat-sport event, Lauren Ballin (11-5 MMA) squares off with Meng Bo (13-5) in a strawweight fight. Aregntina’s Ballin is looking to shake off a two-fight losing streak; while the Chinese Bo carries a three-fight winning streak into her ONE Championship debut.
