Former NFL’ers turned UFC employees Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub met in the cage at UFC 165 Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Unlike their previous occupations, this one allows powerful blows to the head of their opponents. In fact, it’s encouraged. However, for the first 30 seconds of their showdown on Saturday, nobody told these two heavyweight sluggers, as there was not a single strike thrown. The former training partners and castmates on The Ultimate Fighter 10 met in the center of the Octagon without touching gloves. The pre-fight trash talk was hot and heavy between the former friends, and after the first 30 seconds had ticked away, the two big men started exchanging with reckless abandon.

Cerrone, who has become a fan-friendly scraper of epic proportions during his tenure in the UFC was making his tenth appearance in the Octagon and was looking to add some career momentum after his recent win over K.J. Noons at UFC 160. Dos Anjos was riding a UFC career best four-fight winning streak, and certainly wasn’t interested in seeing “The Cowboy” render all of his previous victories moot

MacDonald walked away with the victory against “The Juggernaut,” but questions lingered as to whether it warranted a future title shot. On that night, however, Newton shocked the MMA universe by dispatching the former Strikeforce champion with a stunning spinning backfist knockout early in the first round. Not only was it one of the bigger upsets in recent memory, it also marked the first promotional defeat for Bellator’s biggest free agent signing to that date. Marloes Coenen is convinced she won’t be overpowered by Cristiane Santos when they meet again at Invicta FC 6 on Saturday. “I think I’m a completely different fighter than three years ago,” she told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “We work out with a group of 12 to 15 persons. Every body goes deep and everybody is screaming and sweating. That’s so much better. “When I look in the mirror, I see a difference in my muscles.” Coenen underestimated the Brazilian fighter’s strength when they first met and paid the price with a third-round TKO loss to “Cyborg” in the now-defunct Strikeforce. It was her first opportunity to win a major title. She doesn’t plan on falling back again. “['Cyborg'] completely out-powered me,” she said about their January 2010 fight. “I was like, ‘Ah, the girl looks tough, I can handle that.’ Until I was in the cage, and she really smashed my face in.” More specifically, she said her face was like “jello pudding.” But it was also was something of a badge of honor for Coenen, who held up longer amid the onslaught of Santos’ ferocious punches, unlike countless others. “I really felt good about it,” Coenen said.

A week from today, Forrest Griffin (19-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC) and Stephan Bonnar (15-8 MMA, 8-7 UFC) will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, and they’ll go in largely on the strength of their first fight in 2005. Griffin and Bonnar met in the light heavyweight finals of the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” In the live finale, the two slugged it out for three rounds.
