There were chokes galore on Friday at Maximum Fighting Championships’ first event of 2014. The MFC 39 main card opened with three straight rear-naked chokes, then added a fourth in the co-main event. Anthony Hamilton dominated Darrill Schoonover to win a unanimous decision in the MFC 39 main event, which took place at Northlands Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

In a dominant display, though not one that was overly exciting, Anthony Hamilton retained his Maximum Fighting Championships heavyweight title. Hamilton grinded out “Ultimate Fighter” veteran Darrill Schoonover for a fairly easy unanimous decision in the MFC 39 main event on Friday. Maximum Fighting Championships heavyweight champion Anthony Hamilton has the unfortunate luck of earning a spectacular knockout in a year filled with them. Hamilton’s head-kick KO of Smealinho Rama at this past October’s MFC 38 event is unlikely to win him much more than an honorable mention alongside UFC fighters Chris Weidman, Travis Browne, Mark Hunt and others. But that’s OK for the 33-year-old fighter, who splits his time between Jackson-Winkeljohn’s MMA and Ivan Salaverry’s MMA in his native Washington. There has been yet another switch to Maximum Fighting Championship’s first event of 2014. An injury has knocked Ryan Chiappe (10-8) out of his fight against Mehdi Baghdad (9-3) on the main card. In Chiappe’s place will step Sean Powers (8-3). Baghdad was an injury replacement for Chase Degenhardt.

An injury has knocked Chase Degenhardt (8-3) from his fight against Ryan Chiappe (10-8), and Chiappe now will face French fighter Mehdi Baghdad (9-3) in a welterweight bout. In addition, a fight between Derek Boyle and Aaron Gallant has been scratched from the lineup thanks to a Gallant injury.
