Since its announcement, UFC 306 celebrating Mexican Independence Day at the Sphere in Las Vegas was characterized as a ‘one-off’ event. On Tuesday, following Dana White’s Contender Series, UFC CEO Dana White explained how a rift with partner MGM led to the fight promotion hosting an event at the state-of-the-art venue. Last year’s “Noche UFC” event was held at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. T-Mobile Arena is owned by MGM Resorts International and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). The UFC has a partnership with MGM. When the fight promotion wanted to book T-Mobile Arena for this year’s “Noche” event, the venue wasn’t available

Alistair Overeem vs. Frank Mir Added to UFC 167

A heavyweight clash between former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem and former UFC champion Frank Mir has been added to the already stacked UFC 167 card on Nov. 16 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The match-up was announced by the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Thursday evening. Both fighters come into the bout on losing streaks.

Anderson Silva came trotting into the media room to join the post-UFC 162 press conference at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Arena on Saturday night looking almost exactly the same as he had on all those other nights when he emerged as the winner rather than the loser. He wore a dark suit, a yellow Nike cap and a pair of sneakers. His face seemed relatively untouched, as usual, and his expression was still like that of a man who was sure there was something to smile about and was just waiting to find out what it was. That’s the Silva we know. The only thing different was that, this time, when he took his seat at the dais, the UFC middleweight belt wasn’t in front of him. Instead it was on the other side of the podium, getting acquainted with its new owner

In the seven years since, “The Spider” has barely been challenged inside the Octagon, turning away a Who’s Who in the 185-pound and even 205-pound divisions. However, a growing number of experts expect that challenge to finally emerge in the form of undefeated No. 1 contender Chris Weidman at UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman on July 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Leading Las Vegas oddsmakers make the 9-0 Weidman the shortest underdog to face Silva in over five years, since then-reigning PRIDEFC champion Dan Henderson collided with the Brazilian back in March 2008. The sportsbooks believe a Weidman victory this Independence Day Weekend is more likely than a Chael Sonnen victory was at last summer’s Independence Weekend event, despite Sonnen having famously dominated Silva for four-plus rounds in a previous bout.

At least the part about us always trying to put him out of the game. At least as long as you understand “you guys” to refer to the media crowding around him, asking questions that basically boil down to, So you had enough yet? This is something we do with fighters of a certain age. Mid-30s is usually when it starts, though it can skew younger or older depending on when you started, how many fights you’ve had and how many times you’ve woken up with a great view of the ceiling at the MGM Grand. Nogueira is 37 years old.
