More than a month later, the collective MMA world still is abuzz over the knockout loss longtime pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva suffered at the hands of Chris Weidman . UFC middleweight champ Silva was dropped by Weidman on July 6 at UFC 162 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for his first loss in the UFC after a 16-0 start – and first knockout loss of his career. Weidman, as the new champ, will defend the title in a rematch against Silva in the same building he won the belt when the two headline UFC 168 on Dec. 28.

Dana White again blasts conspiracy theories, Sports Illustrated on UFC 162 claim

Responding again today to questions of whether the main event of UFC 162 was fixed, UFC President Dana White ranted at conspiracy theorists and then targeted one of the most respected institutions in sports reporting. “Who’s going to throw a fight by getting viciously knocked out?” the UFC executive ranted during an appearance on ESPN2′s “Highly Questionable.” “You know how stupid you’d have to be to even think that?” “Speaking of morons, Sports Illustrated had this group of people together, and they actually – Sports Illustrated! – had this panel saying, ‘Yeah, so I heard over the weekend, this fight might have been fixed.’ First of all, these people looked like they covered tennis – not fighting – and you could tell none of them even watched the fight.” White was referring to a panel of reporters that mused on whether Anderson Silva took a dive against the newly minted UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman during a segment on the web series SI Now, which covers hot topics in sports. “For somebody like Sports Illustrated – people are supposed to be credible journalists – to go out and say something that stupid when they never even watched the fight, it’s just a testament to how bad reporting is getting these days,” White continued. “It’s more about the shock factor than the fact factor.” It’s not the first time White has let expletives fly on the topic. Immediately after the pay-per-view event, which took place July 6 at MGM Grand Garden Arena, he said people who thought that Weidman’s knockout was predetermined were “f—ing idiots.” Yet for several days, the topic hung in the air, which likely prompted the SI panel to address the situation. None of the journalists, however, were MMA reporters for the storied news outlet. Reps for SI.com could not be reached for comment. As White pointed out on ESPN2, if the fight was fixed, it would have been far smarter to have Silva tap to Weidman’s submission attempts prior to his fight-ending KO, and under better odds.

As UFC President Dana White recently made clear, and disclosed payouts for Saturday’s UFC 162 show, it’s the guys who win the fights, sell the tickets and get people talking that reap the biggest rewards. Top-five pay-per-view draw and middleweight champ Anderson Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC), who recently inked a new 10-fight contract with the UFC, will bank a guaranteed $600,000 for fighting challenger Chris Weidman (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC), according to figures from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Silva, 38, stands to earn an additional $200,000 by defending his title an 11th time, which would add to his UFC record. The 29-year-old Weidman, meanwhile, is guaranteed $24,000 and an additional $24,000 if he makes history by taking the belt. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently requested and received disclosed salaries for UFC 162, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas

Light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and middleweight champ Anderson Silva are among the nominees for “Best Fighter” at the 2013 ESPN Espy Awards. Also nominated in the category are boxers Canelo Alvarez, Danny Garcia and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Fans can vote on the “Best Fighter” of the year and 34 other categories at the 2013 ESPY Awards’ official website . It’s the third straight year Jones has been nominated in the “Best Fighter” category. It’s also the third nomination for Silva, who was put up for the award in 2009 and 2012.
