Prior to UFC 163 , middleweight jiu-jitsu ace Thales Leites hadn’t fought inside the Octagon since losing to Alessio Sakara at UFC 101 in 2009. That split-decision loss came just months after Leites battled middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 97. For many, the release came as a surprise, as Leites was touted as one of the more highly praised ground players in MMA at the time. On Saturday night at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Leites found himself once again fighting inside the Octagon, having toiled in various promotions for the past four years. During his time away from the UFC , the Nova Unaio product managed a 6-1 record, scoring wins over UFC vets Matt Horwich and Jeremy Horn, earning his way back into the world’s premier fighting organization. English brawler Tom “Kong” Watson was the fighter given the job of welcoming Leites back to the cage. And as far as Watson was concerned, it certainly wouldn’t be a friendly welcome. Round one saw the Rio native, Leites, open up with the aggression you would expect from a man who probably spent the last 50 or so months wondering if he would ever be fighting for divisional relevancy again.

Demetrious Johnson: Future could hold UFC superfight with bantamweight champ

SEATTLE – For the past several years, any talk of UFC superfights has centered around former middleweight champion Anderson Silva either moving down to fight Georges St-Pierre or up to meet Jon Jones . With Silva’s recent loss, those discussions have cooled, but if UFC flyweight title holder Demetrious Johnson has his way, that talk may start centering around the sport’s lighter divisions. Right now my focus is John Moraga ,” Johnson told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “But I think if everything goes well with this fight and I tackle this challenge and come out victorious, everybody is talking about the superfights and middleweight with Anderson Silva and Jon Jones and ‘GSP.’ I think there are superfights to be had in the flyweight division and bantamweight division.” Johnson, of course, used to compete in the UFC’s bantamweight division and even competed once for the title in that weight class, though he ended up losing a unanimous decision to current champ Dominick Cruz . But when the UFC added the 125-pound division, “Mighty Mouse” dropped to flyweight and claimed the promotion’s first title in that division. On Saturday night, Johnson (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) meets Moraga (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in the main event of UFC on FOX 8, which takes place at Seattle’s KeyArena and airs on FOX. According to oddsmakers, Johnson is as much as a 5-to-1 favorite to retain his title, which would mark the second consecutive defense of his belt.

UFC 162 officially draws 12,964 attendance for $4.826 million live gate

UFC 162 earlier this month officially drew an attendance of 12,964 for a live gate of $4,826,450. Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer on Thursday released the figures to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Officials initially announced an estimated attendance of 12,399 for a live gate of $4.862 million. The live gate figure puts the event in third place for the UFC all-time at MGM Grand Garden Arena, trailing UFC 148 and UFC 66. UFC 162 took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and the main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. Chris Weidman Coach Believes Anderson Silva is Going to Have a “Bad Night” in Rematch

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman ended Anderson Silva’s seven-year reign atop the middleweight division at UFC 162 on July 6 by knockout. The two are set to rematch on Dec. 28 at UFC 168, and Weidman’s coach, Ray Longo, thinks it’s going to be another bad night for Silva. “This guy had a highlight reel that would scare the crap out of anybody. Now, knowing that he can knock this guy out – you’ve seen it in boxing a hundred times, guys don’t come back from that type of knockout. On top of that, the guy is 40 or 39 or whatever he is. I don’t see it,” Longo told MMAWeekly.com content partner Shameless Radio about the rematch. Matt Hobar and William “Bubba” Bush became new champions at Friday night’s Legacy FC 21 at the Arena Theater in Houston, but it was UFC veteran Leonard Garcia and world champion boxer Holly Holm that stole much of the night’s thunder. Hobar dominated his fight with Angel Huerta in the night’s main event, taking the fight to him. It didn’t take Hobar long to put Huerta on the mat and transition to his back, securing a fight-ending and title-winning rear naked choke. The victory put the Legacy bantamweight belt firmly around Hobar’s waist. Bush gave Larry Crowe little chance of becoming the promotion’s middleweight champion, putting him on the mat a couple of times in the first round.

New York’s Nassau County in Long Island will honor recently crowned UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman with a ceremony today at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT). You can watch a live stream of the event, in which July 17 will be declared “Chris Weidman Day.” Today’s ceremony takes place at Long Island’s Coral House. County executive Edward Mangano and other officials will be on hand for the festivities. The ceremony follows Weidman’s July 6 upset of longtime titleholder Anderson Silva at UFC 162. In the pay-per-view headliner, Weidman capitalized on Silva’s taunting and clowning after connecting on a fight-altering left hook early in the second round. It halted Silva’s 17-fight win streak and string of 10 consecutive UFC title defenses.
