UFC on Fox 8 Results: Demetrious Johnson Dominates John Moraga, Secures Armbar Finish

Heading into his flyweight title fight against champion Demetrious Johnson , relatively unknown John Moraga had repeatedly said that he was going to be the “bully,” when he and “Mighty Mouse” met in the cage. In front of a packed house at the KeyArena in Seattle at UFC on Fox 8 , Moraga never stopped trying, he never stopped moving, but a bully he was not. Earning 11 of 11 takedowns and using an all-world technical ground game, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson dominated the West Phoenix native for the majority of the 25 minutes, earning his second consecutive title defense. Moraga opened round one looking to establish himself in the cage. Prior to his scrap with Mighty Mouse, Moraga had been regulated to the preliminary card in his previous UFC outings.

SEATTLE – While speed has been his hallmark, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson mixed in some noticeable strength in his latest title defense. The UFC’s ever-active 125-pound champ overpowered title challenger John Moraga while using frequent takedowns, suplexes, and a steady stream of ground and pound before notching the first stoppage win of his UFC title run. The bout headlined Saturday’s UFC on FOX 8 event at Seattle’s KeyArena. It aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook. Moraga (12-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC), who went from a pair of low-profile wins on untelevised UFC preliminary cards to a network-televised main event, was simply outmatched once Johnson (18-2-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) closed the distance. Both fighters come from wrestling backgrounds, but “Mighty Mouse” continually put Moraga on his back and clearly won rounds before securing a final-round armbar to halt the bout

Demetrious Johnson: Future could hold UFC superfight with bantamweight champ

SEATTLE – For the past several years, any talk of UFC superfights has centered around former middleweight champion Anderson Silva either moving down to fight Georges St-Pierre or up to meet Jon Jones . With Silva’s recent loss, those discussions have cooled, but if UFC flyweight title holder Demetrious Johnson has his way, that talk may start centering around the sport’s lighter divisions. Right now my focus is John Moraga ,” Johnson told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “But I think if everything goes well with this fight and I tackle this challenge and come out victorious, everybody is talking about the superfights and middleweight with Anderson Silva and Jon Jones and ‘GSP.’ I think there are superfights to be had in the flyweight division and bantamweight division.” Johnson, of course, used to compete in the UFC’s bantamweight division and even competed once for the title in that weight class, though he ended up losing a unanimous decision to current champ Dominick Cruz . But when the UFC added the 125-pound division, “Mighty Mouse” dropped to flyweight and claimed the promotion’s first title in that division. On Saturday night, Johnson (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) meets Moraga (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in the main event of UFC on FOX 8, which takes place at Seattle’s KeyArena and airs on FOX. According to oddsmakers, Johnson is as much as a 5-to-1 favorite to retain his title, which would mark the second consecutive defense of his belt.

Just a week away from putting his UFC flyweight championship on the line against John Moraga at UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson has achieved something greater than even UFC gold. He’s become a mighty poppa for the first time. The UFC tweeted out the news on Friday that Johnson and his wife, Destiny, welcomed the arrival of their first child, a baby boy. In a recent conference call with the media, Johnson was asked if the pending delivery of his first child added any pressure or inspiration leading up to his fight with Moraga. “No, no added pressure or no inspiration,” said Johnson. “Obviously, I’m happy to be a father, but everything is the same. Nick Pace’s MMA Comeback Begins with His Pro Kickboxing Debut at Glory 9

At just 22 years old, former UFC bantamweight and one-time WEC combatant Nick Pace had achieved many fighters’ lifelong goal of competing in the upper-echelon of mixed martial arts promotions only to have it slip through his grasp. Now, at 26, he’s ready to step into the kickboxing ring as the first step towards reclaiming his former glory in MMA. Undefeated at 5-0 when he made his WEC debut, Pace met a then-unheralded fighter by the name of Demetrious Johnson at WEC 51 in September 2010. The New Yorker lost that fight to the future UFC flyweight champion in a bout he took as a late replacement. “Going into that fight they called me with like five or six weeks and I took it,” Pace told MMAWeekly.com. “When they call you, you just have to take it. I was 5-0 as a pro (before that) and I really think I went in a little too early. But, I mean, what are you gonna do – not go in?” Pace lost the bout with “Mighty Mouse,” and would make his UFC debut months later in a winning effort over Will Campuzano at The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale . Despite the win over Campuzano, the Brooklyn-born newcomer showed his first signs of immaturity as a professional fighter when he missed weight for the fight and was subsequently fined a percentage of his purse. Pace went on to have two more fights in the world’s premier fighting organization; both unanimous decision defeats against MMA veterans Miguel Torres and Ivan Menjivar, respectively. The loss to Torres came on the heels of him once again failing to make weight, and it undoubtedly played a factor in the young scrapper being released from the company
