Former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling has been dealt a curve ball. Originally slated to meet fellow UFC fighter Nathaniel Wood, Sterling is now set to meet former UFC fighter Mike Grundy in a grappling match on Sept. 30 at Polaris 25 in Wales. Sterling, 34, currently fights at 135 pounds. Grundy, 36, fights at featherweight. Sterling (23-4 MMA, 15-4 UFC) won the bantamweight title in March 2021 by disqualification against Petr Yan.

LONDON – Makwan Amirkhani needed less than a minute to put Mike Grundy to sleep in an absolutely critical career bout for both men at UFC Fight Night 204 . In a matchup in which both fighters entered on losing skids and highly motivated to get the job done, Amirkhani (13-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) locked in his patented anaconda choke on Grundy (16-8 MMA, 6-6 UFC) just 57 seconds into the featherweight fight at The 02. Grundy was determined to get the win after revealing pre-fight his father was terminally ill . They showed his father cageside on the broadcast just before the bout began, but things didn’t play out the way that side hoped when Amirkhani locked in his technique early and squeezed until Grundy went out cold. Mike Grundy thinks drop back down to welterweight could be good for teammate Darren Till

With a bit of discipline, Mike Grundy thinks Darren Till can return to his original home. UFC featherweight Grundy, Till’s wrestling coach at Team Kaobon, doesn’t see a return to welterweight as a bad move for Till. Although “The Gorilla” missed weight in two of his eight welterweight bouts in the UFC, he was able to put together an impressive run that led to a title shot. Back-to-back stoppage losses in a title fight to Tyron Woodley and a home soil headliner against Jorge Masvidal prompted Till to move up to middleweight, where he couldn’t quite get establish himself as a viable contender, going 1-2 in three appearances to date. So while Grundy sees middleweight in Till’s future, he thinks a drop back down to welterweight could work for him, as well. “He is big, and I think he could go back to 170,” Grundy told MMA Junkie

Mike Grundy is taking a must-win approach heading into his next fight. Grundy (12-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) meets Makwan Amirkhani in the UFC’s targeted return to London on March 19, where he’ll look to snap a two-fight losing skid. After stopping Nad Narimani in his UFC debut, Grundy has dropped back-to-back competitive decision losses to Movsar Evloev and Lando Vannata. But the standout wrestler thinks he’s yet to live up to his full potential and hopes he’s able to have a standout performance against Amirkhani (16-7 MMA, 6-5 UFC). “My back’s a little bit against the wall,” Grundy told MMA Junkie. “The fights that I’ve had and I’ve lost, they’ve both been close – especially the last one against Lando.
