‘King Mo’ Lawal has no regrets about fighting ‘Cro Cop’ so soon after Ishii: ‘I knew what I was getting myself into’

On Dec. 16, Muhammed Lawal was in Dublin, Ireland, headlining Bellator 169 opposite Satoshi Ishii. Less than two weeks later, he was in Japan, this time getting ready to face Mirko Filipovic at the Rizin FF Grand Prix Open Weight 2016. Lawal, who’d taken a unanimous decision over Ishii, ended up suffering a TKO loss to “Cro Cop” in the quarterfinals of Rizin’s tournament. But, in spite of the unfortunate outcome, “King Mo” doesn’t regret taking on such close-together cage appointments. After all, what is a little bit of jet lag after a lifetime of overcoming physical hurdles?

Mirko Filipovic ’s martial times have come to an end. Again. That’s what he told a Croatian website recently, anyway. Apparently his victory in the Rizin FF 2016 Open Weight Grand Prix was the career high point he was holding out for. Or, an alternative explanation, “Cro Cop” has finally run his body all the way into the ground, for real this time

Fresh off of winning the Rizin FF Grand Prix Open Weight 2016, Mirko Filipovic is apparently hanging up his gloves – again. “That was definitely my last tournament,” Filipovic recently told CroatiaWeek.com . “I have health problems, and this is definitely the end of my career. I know I have announced my retirement before, but this is definitely it.” “Cro Cop” called it quits less than two years ago under controversial circumstances.

Filed under: News Mirko Filipovic turned back the clock in the quarterfinal round of today’s Rizin Grand Prix Open Weight 2016 when he upset 2015 tournament champion Muhammed Lawal with a second-round TKO . Filipovic (33-11-2) was originally expected to face Wanderlei Silva at the event, but when “The Axe Murderer” withdrew on less than one month’s notice, Lawal (20-6) opted to step in as a replacement for the quarterfinals of the the 16-man open weight tournament. “Cro Cop” made him pay for that decision, because after giving up an early takedown the Croatian striker found his groove on the feet.

‘King Mo’ vs. ‘Cro Cop,’ Heath Herring vs. Amir Aliakbari slated for Rizin FF 3 grand prix

Two notable names are late additions to the upcoming continuation of the Rizin FF open-weight world grand prix. Bellator veteran Muhammed Lawal (20-5) has stepped in as a replacement for recently scratched Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1) and will fight Mirko Filipovic (32-11-2). Additionally, former UFC and PRIDE fighter Heath Herring (28-14), who hasn’t fought since 2008, has replaced Shane Carwin (12-2) and will fight Amir Aliakbari (3-0) in another quarterfinal-round matchup at the upcoming Rizin FF 3 event. Rizin FF officials confirmed the matchups today when contacted by MMAjunkie

In light of Wanderlei Silva’s withdrawal from an open-weight grand prix quarterfinal with Mirko Filipovic (32-11-2) at Dec. 29’s Rizin FF 3 event, Sefo (2-2) said that, given sufficient time to prepare, he would like to get back a loss suffered to “Cro Cop” in a striking contest back in 2012. “One of these days I hope somebody offers me that fight with a full camp.” Sefo told MMAjunkie Radio.
