Bellator 97 Sees Significant TV Ratings Increase Over First Summer Series Event

Like most summer television programming, Bellator’s Summer Series events have struggled to garner much steam in the TV ratings. Bellator 97 on Wednesday night did reasonably well, however, drawing and average audience of 679,000 viewers on Spike TV, which is well above the 480,000 viewers that Bellator 96 drew on June 19. Bellator’s Season 8 averaged just under 800,000 viewers per event, but that was during the much more viewer friendly winter and spring months. Bellator 97 benefited from a strong fight card that featured two title bouts and the light heavyweight tournament final, which King Mo Lawal won.

Wednesday’s Bellator 97 event included five main-card bouts and five knockouts, including TKO wins by welterweight champion Ben Askren and notable Muhammed Lawal . Check out the video highlights of each bout. Bellator 97 aired on Spike TV from Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. In addition to lightweight champ Michael Chandler (12-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA) topping David Rickels (14-2 MMA, 8-2 BMMA) in just 44 seconds, fellow champ Askren (12-0 MMA, 9-0 BMMA) posted a hugely lopsided TKO win over fellow welterweight Andrey Koreshkov (13-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) in the co-headliner. Two “Summer Series” tournaments also concluded as “King Mo” Lawal (11-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) battered and bloodied fellow light heavyweight Jacob Noe (12-3 MMA, 3-2 BMMA), and heavyweight Vitaly Minakov (12-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) overcame a baffling point deduction to stop Ryan Martinez (10-2 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) late in their fight. The night kicked off with a vintage “Pitbull” performance as Patricio Freire (18-2 MMA, 6-2 BMMA) continually knocked down and ultimately stopped a resilient Jared Downing (9-3 MMA, 0-1 BMMA). Bellator 97 took place Wednesday night at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M., just outside of Albuquerque. It proved to be one of the biggest nights in the company’s history. When former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal met career journeyman Emmanuel Newton in the semifinals of the 2013 Bellator light heavyweight tournament back in February, he did so as an astonishing -1200 favorite. On that night, however, Newton shocked the MMA universe by dispatching the former Strikeforce champion with a stunning spinning backfist knockout early in the first round. Not only was it one of the bigger upsets in recent memory, it also marked the first promotional defeat for Bellator’s biggest free agent signing to that date. Surprisingly, for Lawal, a former Oklahoma State All-American, the upset was much easier to deal with than one might think. “With my amateur wrestling background, a loss is a loss,” Lawal told MMAWeekly.com. “It’s not like MMA is a greater sport than wrestling
