LAS VEGAS – Tim Kennedy not only was willing to grapple with Roger Gracie, he took the jiu-jitsu ace to the ground. Although Kennedy struggled to find the 6-foot-4 Gracie’s chin, he controlled the fight to shut out the Brazilian on two of three judges’ scorecards. The middleweight bout of Strikeforce vets was part of the main card of today’s UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook. Things looked good for Gracie early in the first round when he took Kennedy down and transitioned to back mount. For a few tense moments, Kennedy suffered through a body triangle and fought off choke attempts. But he eventually escaped to his feet, where he snuck strikes in close. In the second frame, Kennedy turned the tables on Gracie and took the fight to the mat, where he landed several punches that shifted the fight’s momentum.

Quinn Mulhern Drops to Lightweight to Face Ryan Couture at UFC 164

Ryan Couture and Quinn Mulhern , two former Strikeforce fighters, are set to square off in a lightweight bout at UFC 164 on Aug. 31 in Milwaukee. UFC officials announced the new bout on Tuesday. Couture and Mulhern is each making his sophomore appearance for the promotion, and each lost his UFC debut. Couture (6-2) was on a four-fight streak entering the Octagon, but couldn’t keep the momentum going when he faced Ross Pearson at UFC on Fuel TV 9 in Sweden. Pearson took the fight to Couture, defeating him by TKO stoppage late in the second round. Mulhern (18-5) suffered a TKO loss to Rick Story in his Octagon debut at UFC 158. That bout, like the majority of Mulhern’s past bouts, was at welterweight

With two banned substance suspensions to his credit, the Brazilian has seen two UFC wins overturned and ruled “No Contest’ over the past two years. On Saturday night in Fortaleza, Brazil, after six months of inactivity due to an aforementioned suspension, Silva defeated former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante via first round knockout, effectively rejuvenating his career. Round one saw the Sao Paulo natives meet in the Octagon without touching gloves. Silva had his usual stone-faced look of determination, as UFC newcomer Feijao stood with a postured look of calm confidence. The opening bell sounded and Cavalcante pressured early looking to land a powerful right hand. Silva backed away, and in the opening seconds looked rigid and slow. Tyson Griffin Makes Promotional Debut Against JZ Cavalcante at WSOF 4 in August

UFC veteran Tyson Griffin will make his promotional debut at World Series of Fighting 4, when he squares off with Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante . WSOF president Ray Sefo and executive vice president Ali Abdel-Aziz confirmed the bout to MMAWeekly.com. It was first reported by Brazilian website Tatame.com . A 1-4 skid saw him ushered out of the Octagon in late 2011, but Griffin (16-6) has undergone a lot of changes in the past couple years. He rejuvenated his training with a move from Xtreme Couture to American Kickboxing Academy. Griffin then defeated The Ultimate Fighter 8 lightweight winner Efrain Escudero at RFA 4 late last year before signing with the World Series of Fighting. Cavalcante (17-7-1) was consistently regarded one of the Top 10 lightweights in the world in the early to mid 2000s, but has had a rough time gaining any momentum over the past few years, losing more often than winning.
