UFC 163 Prelims TV Ratings Suffer From Lack of Promtion and Difficult Summer Season

UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie failed to drive much interest heading into Saturday’s pay-per-view event, which emanated from Rio de Janeiro, and that was reflected in the TV ratings for the preliminary bout broadcast on FX. The UFC 163 Prelims on FX attracted an audience of 1,000,000 viewers for the four-bout, two-hour broadcast. UFC 163 admittedly suffered from a lack of promotional attention overall with the launch of Fox’s new nationwide sports network, Fox Sports 1, and the re-branding of Fuel TV to Fox Sports 2, receiving the lion’s share of the media giant’s focus.

UFC Affirms It Is Working on Compliance for UFC on Fox Sports 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen Athletes

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is headed to Boston on Aug. 17 for its sophomore effort in the city. UFC on Fox Sports 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen is slated for the TD Gardens and is set to serve as featured programming for the launch of Fox’s new nationwide sports channel, Fox Sports 1. A Boston Herald report on Tuesday brought to light an issue that UFC officials faced in regards to all mixed martial arts competitors in Massachusetts being required to have a valid Social Security number, even foreign-born participants. The report noted that the UFC was seeking an exemption from the law, and suggested that the event could be cancelled altogether if things weren’t worked out. The report jumped the gun a good bit, as UFC sources assured MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday that the event “is not in danger, and we’re working on getting visas and social security numbers. Despite a report to the contrary, the UFC on Fox Sports 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen fight card is not in jeopardy. The fight card is slated of Aug. 17 in Boston, and is also supposed to serve as part of the launch-day programming for the new Fox Sports One nationwide sports network. The Boston Herald , however, reported on Tuesday that there are concerns over the participation of foreign-born fighters, such as main eventer Mauricio “Shogun” Rua .
