LAS VEGAS – It wasn’t easy for Joaquim Silva , but he was able to outwork Nazareno Malegarie over three rounds to take a split-decision victory in the opening fight of UFC 191. Malegarie (23-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) was bleeding from multiple cuts by the time the final horn sounded, but never gave up on trying to pressure and land some fight changing shots on Silva (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), but only one judge was convinced he’d done enough to take the fight. The lightweight bout opened up the preliminary card of today’s UFC 191 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas

Malegarie, an Argentinian whose father got him into tae kwondo at 4, won a spot in the house with a second-round TKO of Andre Ricardo. But in a subsequent fight against Fernando Bruno, he was outworked to lose via unanimous decision and eliminated from the show. “Even today, I’m sad when I think about it,” Malegarie told MMAjunkie. “I know that I’m much better than what I showed in the house. On fight day, I wasn’t able to prove myself.” A fight against Joaquim Silva (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at today’s UFC 191 represents not just another chance for Malegarie (28-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who was denied the six-figure payouts and title shots that come with Bellator tournament wins, but a little bit of deja vu: Silva was his bunkmate on the show
