The UFC has signed B.J. Penn to a new contract and the former two-division champion’s first fight back will be against former lightweight titleholder Frankie Edgar in a featherweight bout.

When asked how much he had to convince Bellator MMA lightweight champion Michael Chandler to sign a new long-term deal with the Viacom-owned fight promotion, Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney put it in terms everyone could understand. “I can tell you that every single time Michael and I go out to dinner for the rest of our lives, he picks up the check,” Rebney told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). That sounds just fine to the unbeaten Chandler (11-0 MMA, 8-0 BFC), who told MMAjunkie.com on Wednesday that he’d agreed to a new multi-fight contract with Bellator – one which Rebney insisted would make Chandler “one of the highest-paid lightweights in all of MMA.” The new deal comes just a week before Chandler is slated to defend the Bellator 155-pound title against Season 8 tournament winner David Rickels (14-1 MMA, 8-1 BFC) at Bellator 97 on July 31. It also comes at a time when Chandler had roughly a year left on his existing Bellator contract, according to Rebney. The new contract will keep him off the free agent market and with Bellator for years to come, both men said in a phone interview.

Roy Nelson Inks New 9-Fight Deal with UFC

UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson has inked a new nine-fight deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and plans to retire with the organization. Nelson (19-8) won the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter reality series tournament to earn a six-figure UFC contract. In his ten fights in the organization, Nelson has logged four Knockout of the Night performances and has won one Fight of the Night award. Nelson fulfilled his previous 10-fight contract at UFC 161: Evans vs. Henderson on June 15, losing a unanimous decision to Stipe Miocic . It was clear that Nelson had a new contract when the UFC announced on Monday that he’ll face undefeated Daniel Cormier on Oct. 19 at UFC 166 , but the details of the new deal were unknown.

Chael Sonnen Signs New UFC Contract, Intends to Drop Back to Middleweight After Shogun

Chael Sonnen has a light heavyweight bout on tap with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 in Boston, but after that, he’s headed back to middleweight. Sonnen moved up to light heavyweight to coach opposite Jon Jones on The Ultimate Fighter and then challenge him for his belt at UFC 159. Sonnen failed in his attempt to win the title, but agreed to another bout at 205 pounds to help launch the new Fox Sports 1 network on Aug. 17. After that, with a new contract in hand, he’ll be dropping back down to middleweight. “I’ll return to middleweight after beating Shogun,” said Sonnen on Tuesday night’s edition of UFC Tonight .

Nick Diaz rep refutes UFC offer talk

In an email to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), Nick Diaz rep Jonathan Tweedale today the fighter has not received an offer to return to the octagon. On Wednesday, BJPenn Radio quoted longtime Diaz trainer Cesar Gracie , who said the onetime title challenger had been communicating with the UFC in Las Vegas and that there was ” an offer on the table ” from the promotion that included a potential fight against an unspecified opponent. “Dana has offered him a fight,” Gracie said. “There is an offer on the table, I can’t say who it is, but it’s kind of neat I think. But no decision’s have been made for sure.” In a brief interview today with MMAjunkie.com, however, Gracie downplayed the seriousness of the talks and stressed that, contrary to several media reports, no new contract had been offered, because Diaz was already under contract with the promotion. “I was misquoted by BJPenn.com,” he said. “There’s no bout agreement.

He’s currently in the midst of working his way down to 205 pounds, planning to fight one more time at heavyweight before making the drop. Chael Sonnen says contract expired, offers list of demands for new UFC deal

We’ve heard this bit from Chael Sonnen (27-13-1 MMA, 6-6 UFC) before, but if the self-proclaimed “Gangster from West Linn, Oregon” is to be believed, he’s waiting to sign a new contract before his headlining bout with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua – and he’s apparently got a list of demands in hand. “My contract with the UFC has expired,” Sonnen said during fan-driven Q&A session at this past weekend’s UFC Fan Expo. “So I went to Dana White, and I went to him with a list of my demands because he’s getting my contract together. He thought this was a gag, but I was being serious because it’s not all about money with me.” Sonnen, of course, remains one of the UFC’s most outspoken characters. He frequently claimed in advance of his UFC July 2012 rematch with Anderson Silva that he hadn’t signed a bout agreement, but the contest went on exactly as planned.
