Once upon a time, Joe Riggs (39-14 MMA, 0-1 BFC) was MMA’s version of a cautionary tale. But now, as a cast member of Bellator MMA’s new reality show “Fight Master,” the 30-year-old Riggs said he’s primed for a second run to prominence. “My ass kicking has just begun in my career,” Riggs recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “I’m hitting my second stride.” Riggs already boasts nearly 11 years of professional MMA experience, but he’s best known for an eight-fight UFC run followed by seven appearances under the Strikeforce banner.

Ask it on Twitter in the general direction of @BenFowlkesMMA . * * * * I thought “Fight Master” was different enough from “The Ultimate Fighter” to feel fresh, and yet not so different that it seemed to be trying too hard. In other words, I enjoyed it, and I was kind of surprised that I did. Granted, reality shows all have a certain feel, and this is no different, but having four very different coaches all watching the fights together and playing off one another felt interesting without being cloying. I’m not sure if I’ll still feel that way after a full season of this, but for now I think Spike TV has something worth watching

Randy Couture hopes ‘Gym Rescue’ series helps some of MMA’s ‘growing pains’

Randy Couture counted seven Xtreme Couture franchises in the U.S. and Canada at the height of MMA’s boom late this past decade. Then the market cooled, and gyms began to close. “The economy, especially in the gym industry, has been very difficult,” he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “The economy took care of a bunch of them. There’s two left now with Las Vegas and Toronto.” You could see irony in the UFC Hall of Famer’s new role in “Gym Rescue,” a new reality show that mirrors the popular “Bar Rescue” program, or a bit of savvy casting from the cable network, which inked Couture to a TV deal early this year. In the show, Couture travels to cities around the country to help MMA gyms in the fickle business of getting everyday people into the cage, and keeping them there.

Video: Watch the first 11 minutes of Bellator’s ‘Fight Master’ debut episode

Anxious for an early look at next week’s debut episode of “Fight Master,” Bellator MMA’s new reality show on Spike TV? Officials have released the first 11 minutes of the episode, which airs next Wednesday, June 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. As previously announced, notables Randy Couture , Greg Jackson, Frank Shamrock and Joe Warren serve as coaches on the show. Additionally, 32 welterweights compete in the show’s tournament, in which opening-round winners get to pick their own coaches. The “Fight Master” cast includes many notable names, including the likes of Mike Bronzoulis , Chris Lozano , Joe Riggs , Bryan Travers and Artenas Young. Check out the preview above.
