Bellator denies reports about champ Attila Vegh, releases medical report

As the story goes, Bellator light-heavyweight champion Attila Vegh wasn’t actually injured and instead was told to sit on the sidelines so the organization could book an interim title fight between Muhammed Lawal and Emanuel Newton for its pay-per-view debut on Nov. 2.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney promised several title fights would be part of the Rampage vs. Tito pay-per-view event slated for Nov. 2, and so far he has delivered two. The first was a rematch between current Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler and the recently re-signed Eddie Alvarez .

When former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal met career journeyman Emmanuel Newton in the semifinals of the 2013 Bellator light heavyweight tournament back in February, he did so as an astonishing -1200 favorite. On that night, however, Newton shocked the MMA universe by dispatching the former Strikeforce champion with a stunning spinning backfist knockout early in the first round. Not only was it one of the bigger upsets in recent memory, it also marked the first promotional defeat for Bellator’s biggest free agent signing to that date. Surprisingly, for Lawal, a former Oklahoma State All-American, the upset was much easier to deal with than one might think. “With my amateur wrestling background, a loss is a loss,” Lawal told MMAWeekly.com. “It’s not like MMA is a greater sport than wrestling

When Muhammed Lawal (10-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC) was knocked out by Emanuel Newton earlier this year, some wondered if “King Mo” was already on the downslide in his career. A brutal Bellator 96 finish of Seth Petruzelli (12-2 MMA, 3-1 BFC) addressed those concerns, and now Lawal is promising something even more violent against Jacob Noe . “I don’t like him,” Lawal said at Wednesday’s Bellator 96 post-event press conference in Thackerville, Okla. “I don’t like the gym he trains at. He’s fake. He talks a lot of trash behind my back, and I hope that he’s here listening, or ya’ll can tell him this because I’m going to beat the brakes off of him. I’m going to whoop his ass so bad I’m going to retire him.” Fighting for the first time since his knockout loss to Newton, Lawal impressed in his first-round finish of Petruzelli. Comfortable on his feet but also quick to utilize his wrestling background, Lawal took the fight to the floor and then delivered a stunning, one-punch knockout via ground-and-pound.

After being on the receiving end of a “Knockout of the Year” candidate, Muhammed Lawal delivered one of his own at Wednesday’s Bellator 96 event. In headliner of the event, Lawal (10-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC) scored a violent first-round knockout after blasting a downed Seth Petruzelli (14-8 MMA, 1-2 BFC) with a monstrous right hand. The one-hitter quitter moved Lawal to the finale of the four-man “Summer Series” light-heavyweight tournament, where he’ll meet fellow Bellator 96 winner Jacob Noe . With the win, Lawal successfully rebounded from a spinning-backfist knockout to Emanuel Newton earlier this year. Bellator 96 took place at WinStar World Casino at Thackerville, Okla. The 26 fighters competing on the Bellator MMA 96 fight card on Wednesday night at the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., weighed in on Tuesday making the semifinals of the heavyweight and light heavyweight Summer Series Tournaments official. Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion “King” Mo Lawal takes on Seth Petruzelli in the main event, hoping to rebound from his knockout loss to Emanuel Newton in his last outing. Two preliminary fighters, Derek Campos and Keith Berry, failed to make with and will forfeit a percentage of their fight purse to their opponents, but will still compete on the card. The first fight is expected to take place at 6 p.m. ET and will be streaming live on Spike.com The televised portion of the night will begin at 8 p.m

Ahead of Wednesday’s Bellator 96 event and the start of the organization’s latest Summer Series, Bellator has released a new video preview. Titled “Road to Redemption,” it focuses on two of the event’s main-card fighters: Muhammed Lawal and War Machine . Bellator 96 takes place at WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla. The main card airs on Spike TV following prelims on Spike.com. “King Mo” and War Machine are both part of the televised lineup. After an upset loss to Emanuel Newton in a Season 8 light-heavyweight tournament, Lawal (9-2 MMA, 1-1 BFC) returns to a four-man field and meets Seth Petruzelli (14-7 MMA, 1-1 BFC) in an opening-round matchup. War Machine (12-4 MMA, 0-0 BFC), meanwhile, returns from a 19-month layoff due to legal issues and injuries to fight Blas Avena (8-6 MMA, 1-0 BFC) in a non-tournament bout.
