Eight years ago, David Mitchell watched Chuck Liddell win the UFC light heavyweight title by knocking out Randy Couture at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. Right there, he resolved not to return to the city until he was fighting in the octagon. “Seven-and-a-half years later, that dream comes true,” Mitchell told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “Regardless of what happens, I feel like I’ve already made it.” On Saturday, Mitchell will fight for the first time in Sin City in what is his fourth UFC appearance. It also could be the last time he steps into a cage at all. On his road to the octagon, he’s suffered nerve damage in his spine that once left the left side of his body with a fraction of its usual strength. So Mitchell (12-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC), whose nickname is “Daudi,” feels he’s got little to lose when he walks into the MGM Grand Garden Arena to fight Mike Pierce (16-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) at UFC 162 in the event’s Facebook-streamed curtain-jerker. “This might be my last fight,” he said.

Roy Nelson has a theory as to why UFC President Dana White doesn’t like him. “I think he’s star-struck,” Nelson (19-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC), who has been criticized by White for everything from his ragged, everyman appearance to his negotiating tactics, told USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “Some people get flustered when a bigger star is in the room.” It’s unclear if Nelson, 36, a heavyweight who goes by the nickname “Big Country” and who proudly sports both a beer belly and a bedraggled beard, meant that remark literally or if he even meant it at all. Judging by his reluctance to give straight answers to direct questions, that seems to be the way Nelson likes it. But as Nelson heads into a bout with fellow heavyweight Stipe Miocic (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at UFC 161 in Winnipeg on Saturday (pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET), his relationship with White and the UFC appears to be as big a threat to his career as any opponent. According to White and Nelson’s manager, Mike Kogan, the fight against Miocic is the last on Nelson’s contract. Although Nelson says he doesn’t know whether that is the case — “I have people for that,” he says — he doesn’t deny White’s assertion that he has declined the UFC’s offer of an extension.

Mike Wilkinson: Bezerra’s mask won’t mean anything at UFC on FUEL TV 10

It’s not Halloween, and Mike Wilkinson isn’t scared of a mask. Wilkinson (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) today meets Rony Bezerra (12-3 MMA, 2-0 UFC) – of Rony “Jason” fame because of the Jason Voorhees-style hockey mask he wears, a la the “Friday the 13th” movie franchise. And though Wilkinson toyed with the thought of wearing a mask of his own on the flight from England to Brazil, where the featherweights fight on the main card of UFC on FUEL TV 10, he abandoned the idea. Instead, he’ll just bring his straight-ahead “Warrior” game to the bout – a nickname he got from his gym mates’ idea of his “no retreat, no surrender, never give up” mentality.
