UFC 281 medical suspensions: Frankie Edgar, Dominick Reyes among longest from card with 11 finishes

UFC 281 proved to be a brutal event, and the medical suspensions handed out by the New York State Athletic Commission speak to that. On Monday, MMA Junkie received the full list from the NYSAC, which oversaw UFC 281 at Madison Square Garden in New York. It showed 19 fighters suspended indefinitely on a card that featured 11 finishes, which means those fighters will need doctor’s clearance before returning to the cage. Among the 19 indefinite suspensions, five fighters – Frankie Edgar , Dominick Reyes , Nicolae Negumereanu , Seung Woo Choi , and Ottman Azaitar – received the longest mandatory minimum of 90 days

Ulberg (6-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) kicked off the event at Madison Square Garden with a bang when he punched out Nicolae Negumereanu (13-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) in the first round of the first prelim. A left jab followed by a left hook initiated the brutal sequence. Negumereanu tried to scramble up to his feet but Ulberg ended that possibility with a pair of violent, diving right hands

Negumereanu (13-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) got the first finish of Saturday’s card at American Airlines Center in Dallas when he showed off some devastating striking to put away Potieria (19-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in the second round of their light heavyweight bout. After a competitive first round, Negumereanu stunned his opponent in the second frame. Negumereanu poured it on and hammered Potieria with a gruesome series of knees that forced referee Kerry Hatley to step in and wave it off

Aleksa Camur doesn’t think referee Mike Beltran handled things correctly in his loss to Nicolae Negumereanu at UFC on ESPN 25 – and in his eyes, it cost him the fight. During this past Saturday’s prelims, Camur (6-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) lost a split decision in a fight plagued with fence-grabbing fouls by Negumereanu, but no point deductions occured. The light heavyweight fighter and his team will appeal his split decision defeat with the Nevada Athletic Commission in the near future, a representative for Iridium Sports Agency, which represents Camur, told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. When they re-watched the fight, Negumereanu’s team counted a total of 11 warnings (seven verbal, three physical, and one timeout) from Beltran. If Negumereanu was not given so many warnings and a point was deducted instead, the fight may have ended in a draw. The judges’ scorecards were 29-28, 28-29, and 29-28 in favor of Negumereanu.
