Swanson’s job might be to beat and choke foes into submission, but that’s a risk he has learned to mitigate over years of training and injuries that benched him at critical times in his MMA career. Risking his life through sanctioned violence is a reality he has embraced over nine years in the cage.

Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic, Aleksander Emelianenko reportedly booked for November

It appears that the MMA retirement of Mirko Filipovic might not have stuck. “Cro Cop” (28-10-2) reportedly will continue his return to MMA to face Aleksander Emelianenko (22-6) in November in Russia. That news comes from Russian outlet ValeTudo.ru . The two heavyweights, according to the report, are set to rematch for Russia’s Legend Fighting Show. Emelianenko just this past month competed for that promotion, stopping Bob Sapp 78 seconds into the fight in Moscow. Filipovic and Emelianenko first met in August 2004 at “PRIDE: Final Conflict 2004.” Filipovic won that fight with a first-round knockout stemming from one of his already legendary head kicks. The loss was the first of Emelianenko’s career. Now, more than nine years later, he’ll have a shot at avenging that loss

Following several years of inconsistent scheduling and sporadic results, Josh Thomson finally made his return to the Octagon by squaring off with Nate Diaz at UFC on Fox 7 in April 2013. Thomson spent much of the past eight or nine years fighting for Strikeforce, but found it difficult to fight consistently due to scheduling and injuries. He managed an eight-fight winning streak at one point, but went 3-3 in his six most recent fights prior to his UFC return, leading many to believe his best days were behind him. Such assessments were likely shadowed by the dimmer lights he had been fighting under. Many wrote Thomson off before he ever set foot back in the Octagon, but the one-time UFC title contender wasted no time putting a stamp on his return, embracing the return of the white-hot spotlight. He did something no other fighter has ever done: he knocked Nate Diaz out. Once he did that, other fighters came out of the woodwork wanting to fight him

(This story appeared in today’s edition of USA TODAY .) Even as the fight was happening, Rashad Evans knew it was a bad one. The former UFC light heavyweight titlist could feel it as he stood in the cage across from Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 156 in February. Nogueira waited for Evans to attack. Evans waited for Nogueira. In the end, Evans acknowledges, “Really nothing happened.” Actually, one thing did happen. Evans (17-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) lost a unanimous decision, his second in a row. In nine years as a pro, he had never lost back-to-back fights. He had also never lost while doing so little to try to win, which was what really bothered him.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum ‘s first meeting nine years ago with the now-defunct PRIDE promotion was a snapshot of two fighters miles apart in their development as fighters. Werdum (16-5-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC) then was 10 fights into his career as an MMA fighter who had transitioned to the burgeoning sport from the world of competitive jiu-jitsu. Stats for the fight reflected his skills: He took Nogueira down 10 times and only gave up three. Nogueira (34-7-1 MMA, 5-3 UFC), while no longer at the apex of his career after losing his PRIDE title to Fedor Emelianenko , still was considered one of the most formidable heavyweights in the division. For that fight, he didn’t need to use the jiu-jitsu skills that previously had served him so well. Instead, he was far more effective in exploiting Werdum’s relative lack of experience in striking. He landed more total strikes and knocked down Werdum on four occasions. In the end, it was Nogueira’s experience that carried the day, with judges awarding him a unanimous-decision win after three rounds.
