NSAC suspends Brian Bowles nine months, issues $5,700 fine for UFC 160 failure

The Nevada State Athletic Commission today suspended UFC bantamweight Brian Bowles for nine months and fined him 30 percent of his UFC 160 purse for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio. Bowles, who lost to George Roop via second-round TKO, is suspended retroactively to the event and forfeits $5,700 of his $19,000 purse to the commission. Unexpectedly, Bowles was present at the hearing and said he had no idea why he failed his test, according to ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto , who attended Bowles’ hearing today in Las Vegas. As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) previously reported, the NSAC expected to proceed with its disciplinary complaint without Bowles in attendance , as the fighter hadn’t responded to a written notification of his drug test failure and a temporary suspension.

Anthony Pettis Sidelined for Six Weeks, Won’t Get UFC 164 Fight with Benson Henderson

Anthony Pettis ’ hopes of fighting any time in August were dashed on Wednesday when UFC doctors said that he needs at least six weeks to recover from a recent tear to his meniscus. MMAWeekly.com sources confirmed the news first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, who received confirmation from UFC president Dana White . The good news is that it appears Pettis will avoid surgery. The injury occurred while he was training with Phil Davis during a promotional trip in Rio de Janeiro, where Pettis was supposed to challenge featherweight champion Jose Aldo on Aug. 3 at UFC 163. After dropping out of the Aldo fight, Pettis took aim at lightweight champion Benson Henderson at UFC 164, which happens to be slated for Aug. 28 in Pettis’ hometown of Milwaukee. The problem with that is UFC officials have already announced Henderson would defend his belt against TJ Grant at UFC 164.

Darren Elkins vs. Hatsu Hioki set for UFC on FOX Sports 1 2 in Indianapolis

The UFC finally has one of Indiana’s own on the card for its return to the Hoosier State. Indiana native and resident Darren Elkins (16-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) is set for a featherweight bout against Hatsu Hioki (26-6-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) when the UFC hits the Indiana state capital this August. Sources with knowledge of the fight confirmed the booking to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) after an initial report from Brett Okamoto at ESPN.com . The bout will be part of UFC on FOX Sports 1 2, which takes place Aug. 28 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The event’s main card airs on FOX Sports 1. The main event is a welterweight rematch between Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann . Donald Cerrone meets Rafael dos Anjos in the night’s co-feature
