Asia’s leading mixed martial arts organization was back in action Friday with a fight card mix of MMA and kickboxing at ONE Championship 122 at Singapore Indoor Stadium. In the night’s featured MMA matchup, American grappling ace Garry Tonon continued his rise up the promotion’s featherweight rankings by defeating Japanese former title challenger Koyomi Matsushita . Tonon used his grappling to totally dominated Matsushita through the first two rounds and, though the Japanese fighter rallied late in the third, Tonon’s mastery on the mat ensured he earned a unanimous decision verdict from the three judges at cageside. You’ve got to do something pretty special to earn yourself a title shot after just two performances on the big stage, but South Africa’s Bokang Masunyane may have done just that. The 26-year-old from Cape Town made his ONE Championship debut in December 2019 and scored a unanimous decision victory over Ryuto Sawada to get his ONE career off and running.

Garry Tonon dominates Koyomi Matsushima at ONE Championship 122, then calls for title shot

American grappling ace Garry Tonon continued his rise up ONE Championship’s featherweight ladder by claiming a dominant victory over former title challenger Koyomi Matsushima , then staked his claim for a title shot of his own. After some wild early striking exchanges, Tonon (6-0) successfully closed the distance on Matsushima (12-5) and, after initially grabbing a guillotine choke on the Japanese contender, moved to his opponent’s back and dragged the action to the mat. Once there, “The Lion Killer” locked up a body triangle and relentlessly pursued a rear-naked choke, while Matsushima did well to fend off the American’s submission attack and survive the round, despite having Tonon on his back for the final three minutes of the round. It didn’t take Tonon long to take matters to the mat in Round 2, as he once again took Matsushima’s back and looked to work his way toward another submission opportunity. Again, the Japanese athlete stayed composed under intense pressure and countered Tonon well to stay alive in the matchup, and even managed to finish the round on top and score with some heavy ground strikes to register a little offense of his own before the bell. Tonon switched gears at the start of Round 3 and dived for a leg lock, but Matsushima, who had prepped for the fight by training with Japanese leglock legend Masakazu Imanari, managed to escape the predicament.

Garry Tonon predicts his MMA career is about to take a sizable upward turn after his ONE Championship 122 bout with Koyomi Matsushima. Tonon (5-0) returns to action for the first time in 19 months in Friday’s ONE Championship 122 co-headliner, which takes place at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore and streams on B/R Live. He considers the matchup with Matsushima to be a solid challenge, and one that could earn him a lightweight title shot. That’s not all Tonon has his eyes on, though. Going into 2021, he sees the possibility of title fights in not one, but two different weight classes. “Just based on the landscape of the division I would say it’s highly likely I get a title shot if I win this fight,” Tonon told MMA Junkie.
