By its very nature, MMA is always going to be a violent sport. Ben Askren figured if Paige VanZant wasn’t going to follow up on her infamous Reebok ad, he’d do it for her. The ONE championship welterweight kingpin expertly trolled the UFC star today on his Facebook page, mocking a racy post VanZant later deleted after taking heaps of online criticism. Askren (15-0) aped VanZant’s selfie shot, exaggerating the UFC star’s camera work to highlight his own branded apparel, Askren Wrestling Academy. “Cutest freakin’ close ever,” he drawled. “How about them socks, though?” “Get something that’s amazing to work out in, or just be in,” he added.

Three weeks after May 26’s ONE Championship 55 takes place at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, the UFC will occupy the same venue to host its first Asian card of 2017. For ONE Championship CEO Victor Cui, however, the UFC’s arrival so shortly after their card doesn’t seem to threaten the way they go about their business. After years of experience dealing with the Asian market and its very particular tastes and expectations, Cui trusts his company’s own M.O. too much to fuss about anyone else’s. “It’s not a surprise that the UFC is there – I’ve heard of them before, I don’t know if you know that,” Cui joked during a conference call in support of “ One Championship 55: Dynasty of Heroes .” “They were in Asia and had an office in Asia several years, maybe five years or something like that, long before we even created ONE Championship. So they had their gameplan and they had their thing

Along with the usual pre-fight threats, ONE Championship welterweight champion Ben Askren had to add a thank you to upcoming opponent Agilan Thani . After all, Thani (7-0) did what others apparently were unable or unwilling to do – sign a contract. “Part of my time off was due to other opponents failing to – although they said in the media they wanted to fight – sign the contract to step in the cage,” said Askren (15-0) during a teleconference in support of his meeting Thani at “ ONE Championship 55: Dynasty of Heroes .” “I do really appreciate Agilan’s willingness to step in the cage, and frankly, that’s what being a fighter is all about. It’s about when your opportunity comes, you sign the contract and step in the cage to fight someone.” “ONE Championship 55: Dynasty of Heroes” takes place May 26 at Singapore Indoor Stadium. At 20, undefeated ONE Championship atomweight champ Angela Lee already has seven professional MMA bouts, a title defense and a 2016 “Fight of the Year” candidate under her belt. The list is made all the more impressive by the fact that Lee, set to headline May 26’s ONE Championship 55 event at Singapore Indoor Stadium, got it all done in the less than a two-year period since her pro-MMA debut. With such a swift rise inside the cage came, inevitably, a spike in notoriety outside of it. “Everywhere that Angela goes in Asia, she still surprises me with how big her fanbase is,” ONE Championship CEO Victor Cui said during a media call ahead of the upcoming event in Kallang, Singapore. But as hard to grasp as her unique ride may be sometimes, the young champion herself seems to be taking it all in stride.

Officials today announced Askren (15-0) will fight challenger Agilan Thani (7-0) in the co-headliner of “ONE Championship 55: Dynasty of Heroes.” ONE Championship 55 takes place May 26 at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, and it streams as an online pay-per-view in North America. Askren, who’s No. 6 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA welterweight rankings , turned pro in MMA in 2009 after winning two NCAA Division I national wrestling championships and competing in the 2008 Summer Olympics
