ONE Championship 78 highlights: Here’s what 51-year-old Renzo Gracie did in first MMA bout since 2010

It’s not everyday a 51-year-old MMA legend returns from an eight-plus-year layoff to strap on the gloves and return to the cage. For Renzo Gracie (14-7-1), though, it was largely another day at the office after he tapped out fellow former PRIDE competitor and 100-fight MMA vet Yuki Kondo (59–35–9) with a second-round choke in their welterweight bout, as you can see in the above “One Championship 78: Reign of Kings.” ONE Championship 78 took place Friday at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Philippines, and it streamed live on the ONE Championship app. Gracie, who made his pro MMA debut way back in 1992, has fought for organizations such as PRIDE, EliteXC, IFL and the UFC – all while training and developing the next generation of fighters. And with his latest return, he hasn’t ruled out doing another bout now that he’s returned. Also at ONE Championship 78, Kevin Belingon (19-5) claimed an interim bantamweight title after toughing it out against Martin Nguyen (11-3) over five rounds in their headliner. Additionally, MMA notable Shinya Aoki (41-9) stifled and then bloodied and then finally stopped lightweight Shannon Wiratchai (9-3) for a first-round TKO win in the co-headliner.

A couple weeks after Ariel Sexton pulled off a double submission that we’re still trying to figure out , it was Joshua Pacio ’s turn to gift us with grappling slickness. Pacio (15-2) submitted Pongsiri Mitsatit (9-1) in the first round of their “ONE Championship 78: Reign of Kings” 115-pound bout with what the announcer officially called an armlock. Broadcasting pair Mitch Chilson and Michael Schiavello, however, dubbed it a “rear-naked chicken wing.” Pacio called it a “passion lock.” Our very educated take here is: After pulling it off, Pacio should just be allowed to call this whatever the hell he wants. There was a time when you couldn’t have a conversation about the best lightweights in MMA without at least mentioning Shinya Aoki . Back when he hit a gogoplata on Joachim Hansen at PRIDE Shockwave in 2006, or when he heel hooked Eddie Alvarez at the Fields Dynamite!! New Year’s Eve event in 2008, the skinny Japanese guy with the colorful tights and killer ground game seemed like something special. In those days, the question was whether he’d ever leave the rings of Japan long enough to get a real test in the cages of the North American MMA scene. Then he did, going 1-1 in Strikeforce before losing via first-round TKO in a 2012 Bellator rematch with Alvarez, and with that some important questions got some seemingly very clear answers

Whether it’s coaching, teaching or just sharing hilarious anecdotes from his long, rich history in fighting, Renzo Gracie has never really been out of the conversation when it comes to MMA. On Friday though, Gracie (13-7-1) returns to a position in which we haven’t seen him in a while: He’ll be the one wearing the gloves, with fellow vet Yuki Kondo (60-34-9) standing across from him in the cage at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Philippines.

With current focus on weight-cutting solutions, veteran manager believes ONE Championship may have answers

I was able to travel to Macau recently to be with Adriano Moraes for his flyweight title defense at June’s ONE Championship 74 event. I had not previously been to a ONE Championship event, since the lengthy travel has always seemed to conflict with my schedule, unfortunately. It’s at least a 20-hour flight to anywhere in Asia where ONE holds its events.
