LAS VEGAS – Mike Pierce was well on his way to a snoozer of a win when his hands did the job quicker. Pierce smothered David Mitchell before landing a left hand that set the end in motion midway through the second frame. The welterweight bout opened up today’s UFC 162 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FX and a main card on pay-per-view. From the opening bell, Pierce refused to let Mitchell get any space to strike, and the two spent the bulk of the first frame in the clinch.

Three Koreans made successful comebacks at Top FC 1 – Original in Seoul on Saturday night. UFC veteran Dongi Yang stopped Jae Young Kim with strikes in the second round of the main event middleweight match-up. Yang was fighting for the first time since his unsuccessful UFC stint and was on the front foot right from the opening bell as Kim continually backed up, using lots of head movement and countering with the occasional low kick or punch. The former UFC fighter looked firmly in control as he landed a head kick that seemed to stun Kim and also executed an early takedown. In the second round, Yang was still stalking his opponent, who eventually got trapped in the corner of the ring and was subjected to a barrage of punches and kicks causing referee John McCarthy to step in and stop the fight. With the win, Yang improved to 10-3, breaking a two-fight losing streak, while Kim dropped to 14-11-0-2 with his second successive loss. He dropped a split decision to Melvin Manhoef at Road FC 9 last September. Also on the comeback trail was Seung Hwa Bang, who has been out of action since 2010, but showed that he is still among Korea’s top lightweights by beating the overmatched Joo Dong Hwan by stoppage due to strikes late in the second round

The women’s bantamweight bout was part of today’s UFC 161 event at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. It aired on pay-per-view after prelims on FX and Facebook. Both fighters started quickly at the opening bell, engaging in the center and flurrying with strikes. WINNIPEG – Canadian slugger Sean Pierson snuffed out Kenny Robertson’s wrestling attack for 10 minutes and then survived a third-round comeback bid to secure a majority-decision win. The welterweight bout was part of today’s UFC 161 event at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. It aired on FX after additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a pay-per-view main card. Robertson lunged forward for takedowns from the opening bell, but Pierson snuffed out the early shots and looked to counter with punches. Robertson’s continued efforts were briefly rewarded with a takedown, but Pierson quickly escaped back to his feet and continued to defend well with each subsequent shot. While Pierson suffered a small cut under his right eye during the striking exchanges, he ended the opening round with a few heavy combinations. Pierson opened up on the feet in the second frame, and Robertson’s aggressive takedown attack all but disappeared.
