Gillian Robertson vs. Taila Santos, Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Oskar Piechota join UFC Saskatoon lineup

Two undercard matchups are the first additions to UFC Saskatoon. Gillian Robertson will take on Taila Santos in a flyweight bout, and Marc-Andre Barriault will fight Oskar Piechota at middleweight in the UFC’s first trip to Saskatoon since 2015. MMA Junkie confirmed the matchups Wednesday after an initial report from Saskatoon StarPhoenix . The event will take place June 20 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and is expected to be either an ESPN or ESPN+ event. Robertson (7-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) saw her two-fight winning streak snapped in a first-round TKO loss to Maycee Barber in October.

Puna Soriano made a statement to the UFC middleweight division in his promotional debut Saturday night. At UFC 245, Soriano (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UC) punched his way to victory 3:17 into Round 1. Soriano knocked out former Cage Warriors champ Oskar Piechota in the evening’s curtain jerker. Early in the opening round, Soriano hurt Piechota (11-3-1 MMA, 2-3 UFC) with a series of big punches. However, the Polish middleweight survived and reversed position using a Kimura attempt. However, when the fight rose back to the feet, Soriano went right back to work.

Two bouts have been added to the UFC’s final pay-per-view event of 2019. UFC 245 has added a pivotal flyweight matchup between contenders Sergio Pettis (18-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) and Kai Kara-France (20-7 MMA, 3-0 UFC) and a middleweight clash between debuting Punahele Soriano (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and Oskar Piechota (11-2-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC). A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed each booking to MMA Junkie. The Pettis vs. Kara-France bout was first reported to be in the works by ESPN and was later announced a done deal by the Las Vegas Review-Journal , along with Soriano vs. Piechota

LAS VEGAS – Gerald Meerschaert gave Oskar Piechota props for his durability in their bout at The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale, but he knew he would end the fight one way or another. After a rough first round, Meerschaert (28-9 MMA, 4-1 UFC) rallied to submit Piechota (11-1-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in the second frame of their middleweight contest, which opened Friday’s event at Pearl Theatre in Las Vegas and aired on UFC Fight Pass prior to the FS1-televised card. It seemed as though the fight could have been waved off when Meerschaert was battering Piechota with strikes, but then he left no doubt by applying a rear-naked choke that put his opponent out cold. Meerschaert thought Piechota did a great job fighting through damage, but he could only take so much. Piechota (11-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) took out Tim Williams (15-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) with a big TKO in their middleweight fight. He landed a huge right hand to put Williams on the canvas, and a few punches later he had his first UFC finish in less than two minutes of work. After the finish, Williams was plenty wobbly, and though he was up under his own power, he could be seen asking just what happened to cause the fight to be over. Classic knockout, right there.
