UFC 171 medical suspensions: Carlos Condit draws indefinite term

The knee injury that will require onetime UFC welterweight title challenger Carlos Condit to undergo surgery has left him indefinitely suspended following UFC 171. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversaw the March 15 event at Dallas’ American Airlines Center, recently released a list of medical suspensions arising from the pay-per-view card. Nine of the card’s 26 fighters received longer suspensions than the mandatory terms issued by the TDLR. Condit tore his ACL and meniscus in the second round of his co-main event fight with Tyron Woodley and dropped to the canvas in obvious pain, which gave Woodley a win by TKO. An initial diagnosis given at an area hospital was confirmed earlier this month, and the fighter is now evaluating his options for surgery. Despite an all-out barnburner in their five-round fight for the vacant welterweight belt, neither champ Johny Hendricks nor Robbie Lawler received a significant suspension.

Fresh off a 25-second upset of heavyweight Walt Harris, Nikita Krylov (16-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is dropping to light heavyweight to replace recently arrested Thiago Silva (16-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) at UFC 171. UFC officials today announced the switch, which sees Krylov take on fellow 205-pounder Ovince St. Preux (14-5 MMA, 2-0 UFC) at the event.
