Ex-Bellator champion Patricky ‘Pitbull’ leaves PFL, signs with GFL

Global Fight League has added another notable name to its roster. Former Bellator lightweight champion Patricky Freire , who was released from his PFL contract along with his brother Patricio, has signed with GFL – a new team-format MMA promotion that’s set to debut in 2025. The news was first reported by MMA Fighting on Wednesday and later confirmed by Freire. Freire (25-14) was last seen in action in the second round of the 2024 PFL lightweight season, where he lost a split decision to Bruno Miranda. Freire only competed twice under the PFL, but has a lengthy history with Bellator, as he competed for the promotion for over a decade. The 39-year-old, who won the Bellator lightweight title in 2021, but subsequently lost it the following year to current champion Usman Nurmagomedov, holds notable wins over Besnon Henderson, Josh Thomson, Roger Huerta, and others.

Clay Collard survived an early knockdown Friday to rally and defeat former Bellator lightweight champion Patricky Freire in PFL regular season action. The lightweight bout was on the 2024 PFL 2 main card at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas. The back-and-forth brawl ended by TKO at 1:32 of Round 2 after Collard (25-12) landed consecutive sequences of punches on Freire (25-13).

Alexander Shabliy put on quite the clinic Friday at Bellator 301 when he defeated former lightweight champion Patricky Freire in the semifinal of the promotion’s ongoing grand prix. The bout served as the main card opener at Wintrust Arena in Chicago and saw Shabliy (24-3 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) win a lopsided (and bloody) unanimous decision over Freire (25-12 MMA, 16-10 BMMA). All three judges scored the fight a clean sweep, at 50-45. Shabliy was a man on a mission from the opening bell. Despite the uncertain times for Bellator MMA, the promotion continues to book events. Wednesday, promotion officials informed MMA Junkie that Bellator 301 will take place Nov. 17 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago with two title fights, a tournament fight, and a grudge rematch already scheduled for the main card.
