Paul Kelly triumphs in MMA comeback at Probellum 1 after six-year prison term

Former UFC fighter Paul Kelly made his long-awaited return to action at “Probellum 1: Liverpool” on Saturday night and scored a second-round stoppage win to complete a remarkable journey. Kelly’s return came after serving a six-year prison sentence for heroin trafficking, which began when he was found guilty in 2013. Now a free man, the 35-year-old Brit affectionately known as “Tellys” returned to action in his hometown of Liverpool, England, and defeated Simone Bottino with heavy ground-and-pound in the second round of the night’s main event. Kelly (15-5) started out in typically aggressive fashion as he threw big punches at Bottino (4-7), then attempted to lock up a guillotine when the Italian tried to shoot his way out of danger. Kelly then took his man powerfully to the mat, moved to half-guard, and roughed him up with punches and elbows before moving into full mount and unloading more powerful ground strikes.

In mid-January, former UFC fighter Paul Kelly announced his return to MMA after serving a seven-year sentence for heroin trafficking . While the date and event he’d compete on, March 7 at Probellum 1, has been public for a while, Kelly (14-5) was opponent-less throughout much of his training camp. However, that’s changed. In a social media post Tuesday , the promotion announced Kelly’s challenger: Simone Bottino . Italy’s Bottino (4-6) has won three out of his most recent four outings. The matchup will take place at welterweight and serve as the card’s main event.

A trio of civilians barely notice when veteran MMA heavyweight Cheick Kongo sneaks up and slaps welterweight Paul Kelly with a leg kick, forcing him to do a walk of shame through the suit section of Nordstrom at a Las Vegas mall. Much giggling ensures (via YouTube ): It was 2008, and Kongo and Kelly were two members of Wolfslair MMA, one of the more preeminent teams in the sport. A bond forged by shared blood and sweat gave way to a brotherly rivalry outside the gym, and the mild-mannered Kongo was always the one getting pranked. The thing was, Kelly really knew how to get his teammate – all he had to do was mess with Kongo’s food on fight week.

Former UFC fighter Paul Kelly was sentenced to 13 years in prison for heroin trafficking. The Liverpool Crown Court sentenced the 28-year-old English fighter this past week. He was found guilty in May following a four-day trial . In the trial, prosecutors convinced jurors that Kelly was what amounts to a major drug dealer, working with friends to move heroin by using couriers. “In my judgement you decided to supply Class A drugs when your contract with UFC was terminated,” Judge Mark Brown told Kelly, a father of two, according to the Liverpool Echo . “You obviously enjoyed the high life and saw selling heroin as an easy way to make money.” Several of Kelly’s associates also were issued prison sentences. The sentence likely signals an end to Kelly’s MMA career. His most recent fight came in March, when he knocked out Henrique Santana at UWC 22 in England.

Former UFC fighter Paul Kelly has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after he was convicted of running a drug ring in England. Kelly and childhood friend Christopher St. John McGirr were arrested as part of a wide spread surveillance operation. They were accused of supplying drugs to other dealers. “You were in business with Mr. McGirr supplying heroin to other dealers,” said Judge Mark Brown, according to a report by the Liverpool Echo .
