After a three fight skid that brought his recent UFC record to a paltry 2-7, Paulo Thiago has been given his walking papers. Brazilian MMA outlet Combate first reported the news of Thiago’s release from contract, which ends a five-year stint with the promotion that saw him go from a welterweight hopeful to a struggling preliminary-card fighter. Thiago (15-8 MMA, 5-8 UFC), 33, debuted in the octagon at UFC 95 in 2009 with a thunderous stoppage of top-tier welterweight Josh Koscheck. That sparked an instant rivalry with Koscheck’s American Kickboxing Academy, one in which Thiago came out ahead after going 2-1 against the team with a loss to Jon Fitch and win over Mike Swick. Thiago’s career then sputtered with back-to-back losses to Martin Kampmann and Diego Sanchez before spiraling with a 2-7 run

BRASILIA, Brazil – It might have taken Sean Spencer just a few seconds to put Paulo Thiago down, but it took the full 15 minutes for him to claim the win. Despite dominating Thiago (15-8 MMA, 5-8 UFC) from start to finish, Spencer (12-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) couldn’t put the wounded and weary Brazilian away, and so had to settle for a unanimous decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after a thoroughly one-sided affair. The welterweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 51 event at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil.

Joe Riggs out of UFC Fight Night 51 after injury from accidental shooting

UFC welterweight Joe Riggs (40-14 MMA, 4-4 UFC) was involved in a gun accident with non-life threatening injuries and has been forced to withdraw from a bout with Paulo Thiago (15-7 MMA, 5-7 UFC) at UFC Fight 51, two sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to MMAjunkie on Tuesday. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the incident. However, UFC officials subsequently released a statement saying Riggs was cleaning a pistol in his Arizona home when it discharged and wounded him in the hand and leg. “Riggs was transported to a nearby hospital in Arizona where he is being treated by physicians,” a UFC statement read. “We wish Joe a speedy recovery.” Riggs did not respond to multiple requests for comment. His coach, John Crouch, also declined to confirm the injury
