Ed Herman can share a hundred stories about his early MMA career. There was the time a delayed flight forced a mad scramble and a fight with Nick Thompson just a few hours after his plane touched down in Ohio. There were the countless roadside motels that, according to Herman, would make even the most hardscrabble traveler think, “Man, that place looks sketchy.” There was the meager $200 paycheck for his first MMA fight, though it nearly matched his weekly construction-job paycheck, so it seemed like a windfall at the time. And there’s the time his trainer’s flight got mixed up and forced him to rent a car and drive across Texas to make Herman’s fight just in time. Back then, in the early 2000s (and well before MMA’s current boom), that was the life of an up-and-coming fighter. But now, more than seven years into a UFC career that has seen plenty of highs and some hefty paychecks, Herman is thankful for his current veteran status.

White: No decision on eliminating UFC fight-night bonuses, will talk to fighters

LAS VEGAS – Earlier this week, in response to some recent complaints about fighter pay, UFC President Dana White floated the idea of eliminating fight-night bonuses and channeling that money to bigger base paydays for fighters. However, White today said at the pre-UFC 162 press conference that the organization isn’t currently close to implementing such a plan. Currently, the UFC gives out $50,000 bonuses for each event’s best knockout and best submission, as well as the best fight (which goes to both the winner and loser). The fight-night awards have gone as high as $129,000 in the past, and a handful of dual-award winners have banked some serious cash due to the bonus system. However, some fighters, both current and past, have recently complained about the difficulty in living on the salaries given to typical lower-level fighters, where base paydays can be $6,000 to show and an additional $6,000 to victorious. And on Monday, White offered a potentially significant adjustment. “You don’t like the structure? All right, we’ll pay the lower-level guys more money – no more f—ing bonuses,” he said.

World Series of Fighting 3 salaries: Josh Burkman, Jon Fitch top $200k payroll

Main event winner Josh Burkman and his opponent, Jon Fitch , were the top two earners at this past Friday night’s World Series of Fighting 3 event. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today requested and obtained the list of disclosed paydays from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The total disclosed payroll for the event was $200,000. WSOF 3 took place at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The main card, including Burkman’s 41-second submission of Fitch, aired live on NBC Sports Network.
