Invicta FC 12 adds three bouts, including Modafferi vs. Porto rematch

Roxanne Modafferi The card for Invicta FC 12 is beginning to come together with the announcement of three more fights, including a rematch in the co-main event. Roxanne Modafferi (17-11) will look to repeat her 2008 TKO of Vanessa Porto (17-6) when the two meet in a flyweight bout. Headlined by a strawweight title fight between Katja Kankaanpaa (10-1-1) and Livia Renata Souza (7-0), Invicta FC 12 takes place April 24 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The event streams live in its entirety on UFC Fight Pass. Modafferi scored the only knockout victory of her career when she first fought Porto in 2008. Modafferi is currently riding a two-fight winning streak, a significant turnaround from the six-fight losing skid that preceded it. Porto is on her own two-fight winning streak and has won 10 of 13 bouts since the loss to Modafferi

It was true when the sport first started to flourish, and it’s equally true now: Being an MMA fighter can be a tough way to make a living. On Saturday “The Ultimate Fighter 18″ veteran Peggy Morgan fought at Invicta FC 8. Despite a noble effort in her UFC Fight Pass-streamed bout, Morgan (2-2) proved no match for Mexican bantamweight prospect Irene Aldana (4-1). She survived one flurry, but when Aldana followed with another, Morgan crashed to the mat and ultimately tapped out from a first-round rear-naked choke . Following the fight, Morgan posted a photo (via Twitter ): Rough night.

The MMA landscape is set to change once again when the UFC adds a second women’s weight class – the talent-rich 115-pound strawweight division – to its roster in 2014. UFC President Dana White announced the news on Dec. 11 and confirmed the division will launch during “The Ultimate Fighter 20,” which begins filming in May. Unlike in past seasons of the long-running show in which winners earned trophies and six-figure contracts with the UFC, the “TUF 20” victor will be crowned the first UFC women’s strawweight champion. A total of 16 women will compete on the show, and 11 have already been named. All 11 fighters come to the UFC after having their contracts transferred from Invicta FC

TUF 18 Finale medical suspensions: Pena, Corassani among several with potentially lengthy terms

After taking an illegal knee to the face against Maximo Blanco , Akira Corassani will be on the shelf for as much as six months. Corassani was shut down by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a lengthy term – though the featherweight fighter can return earlier than that if his broken nose is cleared by a doctor. Even with the early clearance, though, Corassani will be shut down for two months. MMAjunkie on Monday requested and received a list of the medical suspensions from this past Saturday’s TUF 18 Finale event, which took place at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

In three rounds of fighting, the action was almost all Duke, who used a variety of attacks to win a unanimous decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
