LAS VEGAS – Roman Dolidze first damaged the leg of Phil Hawes before landing shots to the head for a savage knockout at UFC Fight Night 213 . In a sequence near the start of the middleweight bout at the UFC Apex, Dolidze (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) got Hawes (12-4 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in a nasty leg lock that appears to pop the knee out. The fight continued, though, and turned into a striking affair. That played huge to Dolidze’s advantage, because he waited for his moment to pick the shots and land a clean combination that floored Hawes and put the lights out. LAS VEGAS – High expectations were placed on Phil Hawes early in his career, and he hopes his journey will inspire other young fighters who are pinned to be the next big thing. The Dana White’s Contender Series veteran came out of the gates on fire in his UFC debut, finishing Jacob Malkoun in just 18 seconds. After that, however, Hawes (12-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) edged out a majority decision over Nassourdine Imavov, followed by a unanimous decision over Kyle Daukaus. Even though he won those two decisions, many expected him to show up and close the show early as he did in his debut. The lofty expectations were not met by those who picked him to be the man to run through the division and quickly claim UFC gold.

UFC adds Roman Dolidze vs. Phil Hawes to Oct. 29 event

Rising middleweights will square off in October. Roman Dolidze (10-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) will take on Phil Hawes (12-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) at a UFC Fight Night event Oct. 29 expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Two people with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie, but asked to remain anonymous because the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Setanta Sport was first to report the news. Dolidze is 2-1 since dropping down to 185 pounds.

Deron Winn to undergo orbital surgery after UFC on ESPN 37 loss to Phil Hawes

UFC on ESPN 37 was a rough night at the office for Deron Winn . On Saturday’s prelims at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, Phil Hawes (12-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) stopped Winn (7-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) with strikes in Round 2. Winn absorbed a large number of punches throughout the fight, especially in the final minute. Although he still stood as referee Herb Dean dove in, Winn was not doing enough to defend himself in the eyes of the official. While Hawes’ largely one-sided offensive performance was praised by fans and reporters, so was Winn’s heart and chin. Sunday, Winn revealed he suffered in Round 1 an orbital fracture, which will require surgery.
