One effect of relaxing marijuana testing thresholds for Nevada fight licensees could be more disclosure. Keith Kizer hopes applicants would be honest about whether they used marijuana in the weeks preceding a fight, particularly if they were aware of the punishments that could be levied.

Dave Herman passes drug test, cleared for UFC 162 bout with Gabriel Gonzaga

Dave Herman (21-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) is set for his UFC 162 bout against Gabriel Gonzaga (14-7 MMA, 9-6 UFC) after passing a pre-fight drug test ordered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. NSAC Executive Director confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the heavyweight passed a 10-panel test for a variety of banned substances, including marijuana, which landed him in hot water in previous bouts. Two positive tests for the drug were brought front and center during an NSAC meeting on Monday in Las Vegas, which prompted the commission to order a same-day drug test for Herman and require he pass it in order to obtain a conditional, one-fight license for Saturday’s pay-per-view event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Earlier this year, Herman went into rehab as part of a suspension issued by the UFC, which flagged him for pot following his submission loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 153 this past October. He passed the program and was subsequently booked to meet Gonzaga. During the NSAC meeting, Herman said he hadn’t used the drug since this past November and had turned his life around

The Nevada State Athletic Commission today granted UFC heavyweight Dave Herman (21-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) a one-fight license to fight Gabriel Gonzaga (14-7 MMA, 9-6 UFC) at UFC 162, but the permission came with strings – and the third degree. The commission grilled the fighter about a previous marijuana suspension and run-ins with the law before ordering him to be drug tested today at his own expense. The fighter must be clean to get the go-ahead and also is subject to random testing. “It isn’t just us him asking for his word,” NSAC chair Bill Brady said during a meeting today in Las Vegas, where UFC 162 will take place July 6 at MGM Grand Garden Arena. “I look at it as not what you owe to this commission, but what you owe to the UFC for helping you with your rehab and making commitments to them. “They put a lot of money into these fights, and if you fail, that’s a difficult situation.” The UFC reinsted the 28-year-old Herman to fight in April after he completed a 30-day term in rehab, which the promotion ordered after it flagged him for pot following a submission loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 153. A meeting of state athletic commissions next month could determine whether combat sports regulators adopt the World Anti- Doping Agency’s more relaxed rules regarding testing for marijuana. That, in turn, could be good news for some MMA fighters. The Association of Boxing Commissions’ medical committee will then make a recommendation on whether to follow WADA’s marijuana threshold, which was raised from 15 nanograms per milliliter to 150 ng/ mL in an athlete’s urine. Several commissioners have indicated their support for the change, which could reduce the number of fighters who are suspended and fined for pot. At least seven UFC fighters have tested positive for marijuana since 2012. The conference takes place in late July in San Antonio. “I leave medical decisions to medical personnel,” Nick Lembo, chairman of the ABC’s MMA rules committee and also a chief regulator in New Jersey’s athletic commission, told USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com)
