Rampage Jackson Says There’s Always Been a Secret Rivalry with Tito Ortiz

Former UFC light heavyweight champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Tito Ortiz have been friends for over a decade. They’ve been training partners, and at one time, they said they would never fight each other. Times have changed. Their friendship is intact, but the two no longer train together and are going to fight. Ortiz and Jackson will headline Bellator MMA ’s first ever pay-per-view on Nov. 2, and Jackson says there’s always been a bit of a secret rivalry between the two. When Jackson was making his way up the ranks in Japan with the Pride organization, Ortiz was the reigning UFC 205-pound champion. The two began training together at Ortiz’ gym in California under the direction of Colin Oyama. “I trained with Tito for years and I can tell secretly there’s been a little competition between me and Tito. I remember when I first started training with him and Ricco Rodriguez, they used to kick my ass all the time and stuff like that.

The posters advertising UFC 163 make it tough to tell if you’re about to watch a professional MMA fight or a monster movie. “World Featherweight Championship,” it says at the very top. “Aldo vs. Korean Zombie.” Nowhere on the posters trumpeting his clash with UFC 145-pound champion Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) in Brazil on Saturday (pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET) does it mention Chan Sung Jung ‘s actual name.

Before he won the UFC flyweight title and was booked for Saturday’s UFC on FOX 8 headliner, Demetrious Johnson first needed to get by Ian McCall . Twice, in fact. In March 2012 the two fighters were part of a four-man tournament to determine the UFC’s first-ever 125-pound champion. However, a rematch of their opening-round matchup was booked after the first fight ended in a majority draw (and after a scoring error was caught too late to force the contracted sudden-victory fourth round). Check out the video above to see the rematch, which took place at UFC on FX 3 in June 2012. And catch Johnson (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) in action on Saturday, when he meets John Moraga (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in his second title defense. UFC 163 Fighter Ian McCall: “I’ve Kind of Blown My UFC Career So Far”

When former Tachi Palace Fights flyweight champion Ian McCall inked a deal with the UFC in late 2011, he had high expectations. He entered the 2012 UFC Flyweight Tournament to determine the inaugural UFC 125-pound champion. He faced Demetrious Johnson in the opening round and the two fought to a draw. Johnson was originally declared the winner, but after a scoring error correction, the fight was ruled a draw. Johnson defeated McCall by unanimous decision in a rematch. In his next outing, McCall faced Joseph Benavidez and lost via unanimous decision. He’s gone 0-2-1 in his three UFC fights, and was not in a good place mentally. His personal life was coming unraveled as well as his career. The 29-year-old fighter made changes in his life, eliminated some relationships, distanced himself from others, and is ready to move forward inside and outside of the cage. “I’m in a much better place. You know, I’ve kind of blown my UFC career so far, but now it’s time to earn what’s rightfully mine,” McCall told MMAWeekly.com content partner Knockout Radio . “I’ve always been physically ready. Every fight, I’ve always been in shape. I’ve always been there. Brazilian fighters have been making a name for themselves competing in Asia since the dawn of modern MMA competition when Rickson Gracie would submit multiple opponents in a single night at Vale Tudo Japan. Today, the sport has evolved almost beyond recognition, but fighters from the same country that gave us the Gracies are still holding their own in Asia. Among them is Rodrigo Caporal, a long-term resident of Hong Kong, who recently became the 155-pound champion of China. Caporal (9-4) has won five fights out of five since signing with RUFF, a Chinese organization that is government sanctioned, giving its fighters the right to call themselves national champions of the most populated country on the planet. The 30-year-old, who holds a black belt in BJJ, won the title at RUFF 8 in February by defeating Haotian Wu in a rematch. In addition to the belt, he received one million RMB (160,000 USD) in prize money. “Winning the belt meant a lot to me, to see all my hard work and dedication pay off made me very happy. My plan is to use the money to help my family and to help build my life together with my girlfriend,” he said. Caporal’s record competing in Brazil was unremarkable, but he has won six fights out of six in Asia and believes that his skillset as a BJJ black belt gives him an edge against the predominantly Chinese opponents he has been facing.

Bibiano Fernandes is the ONE FC interim 135-pound champion and there has been talk of him moving up to featherweight for a super fight with Shinya Aoki , but next on the agenda for the Brazilian appears to be a unification bout in October or November. “I will be fighting in fall. I’m not sure who I am fighting next, but considering I am the interim champion, I’m assuming that a fight with Soo Chul Kim would be my next step,” said Fernandes. I’ve watched his fights. He’s a tough guy, but I need to feel him in the ring to decide how good he is.” One swing of Chris Weidman’s left hand put proposed UFC superfights on hold, but ONE FC has a potentially huge match-up of its own with its two best pound-for-pound fighters, both capable of competing at featherweight. Aoki (33-6-1) is on track to make his 145-pound debut later this year, while Fernandes (14-3) has already proved he can compete in the division by beating four separate opponents to win the Dream Featherweight Grand Prix in 2009. A featherweight match-up between these two would truly be a battle for pound-for-pound supremacy in Asia and Fernandes is not ruling it out

Several fighters controlled their destinies at Invicta FC 6, including Claudia Gadelha and Leslie Smith . Gadelha stepped up on short notice to fight Ayaka Hamasaki on Saturday night, stepping in for injured strawweight champion Carla Esparza. It was a risky fight for Jewels 115-pound champion Hamasaki, who lost the bout via TKO stoppage to Gadelha. Not only did Hamasaki suffer the first defeat of her career, she also lost her title shot. With the victory, Gadelha earned the shot at Esparza when the champion returns from a knee injury suffered in training. With her unanimous decision victory over Jennifer Maia, Leslie Smith also earned title shot.

Company president Shannon Knapp couldn’t have picked a higher profile event to make the move to PPV, as a rematch three years in the making headlined the fight card. Cris “Cyborg” Justino and Marloes Coenen first met three-and-a-half years ago with Cyborg, then the Strikeforce 145-pound champion, winning by way of TKO stoppage in the third round. On Saturday night, they met with the inaugural Invicta FC featherweight championship on the line. The belt that was on the line was about the only difference from their first fight to this one. Much like their first fight, Cyborg was clearly still the much more aggressive, stronger, and more powerful fighter. Coenen opened strong, attacking with leg kicks and punch combinations, but it was evident from the first round that Cyborg was in full control of the fight
