Matt Brown Hopes His UFC Fight Night 26 Finish of Mike Pyle Earns Him a Marquee Match-up Next

Matt Brown (18-11) is making a strong case for himself being one of the most dangerous welterweights on the planet. The 32-year-old Cincinnati native has strung together a six-fight winning streak in the talent-rich 170-pound division, finishing his last four opponents. Riding high off his UFC Fight Night 26 first-round knockout of Mike Pyle , Brown hopes his recent performances earn him a marquee match-up in his next outing. “Hopefully it put me somewhere, in a good position to get some big fights,” said Brown during the UFC Fight Night 26 post-fight press conference. “In this sport you get what you earn, not what you deserve, so hopefully I earned something good here.” UFC president Dana White was impressed by Brown’s quick finish of Pyle, and believes Brown will face a top ten opponent next. “He made quick work out of a guy whom a lot of people respect, a tough, durable guy,” said White. “I think the fight put him in a real good position to possibly get a spot in that top ten and fight one of the guys in the top ten.” Brown’s win over Pyle accompanied by his winning streak will likely move him into the top ten rankings. And while a top ten-ranked opponent likely awaits him in his next outing, Brown has his eye on the man sitting at the top of the division, Georges St-Pierre .

Chael Sonnen surprised many by submitting Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 on Saturday night in Boston. Hardly anyone, however, could be counted as startled that he immediately took aim at Wanderlei Silva , calling out the former Pride FC champion following his victory. “Wanderlei Silva, six feet tall and 205 pounds, boy, until I met you, I didn’t know they could stack crap that high,” he declared. “Wanderlei Silva, three months, you and the bad guy.” The funny thing is, now that Sonnen has defeated Shogun, proving that he is still a fighter to be contended with at the top of either the 205-pound or 185-pound division, everyone wants to fight him.

The writing was on the wall when Invicta FC on Tuesday announced it had signed former Bellator fighter Felice Herrig to a multi-fight contract, and then Jessica Eye and Jessica Aguilar , two of the top female fighters around, announced via Twitter that Bellator had released them from their contracts. With those three powerhouses gone, Bellator was left with zero women on its roster. The UFC currently has an iron grip on the women’s bantamweight (135-pound) division, ruled by champion Ronda Rousey . Invicta FC – an all women’s fight promotion – is the go-to home for the rest of women’s MMA, with most of the best women in the world fighting for the fledgling promotion. That left Bellator with very few options when trying to line up legitimate competitors for the fighters it had under contract. UFC 165 Fight Card Complete with Alex Caceres vs. Roland Delorme

A bantamweight match-up between former The Ultimate Fighter contestants Alex Careres and Roland Delorme has been added to UFC 165, finalizing the fight card with 13 bouts. Caceres (8-5, 1 no contest) appeared on the twelfth season of The Ultimate Fighter as a lightweight. Following the conclusion of the show, he moved to the featherweight division. After losing his first two fights in the UFC , Caceres dropped down to the bantamweight division. He won three of his first four fights in the new weight class, defeating Cole Escovedo, Damacio Page and Motonobu Tezuka. His one loss in the 135-pound division was by split decision to Edwin Figueroa.

SEATTLE – For the past several years, any talk of UFC superfights has centered around former middleweight champion Anderson Silva either moving down to fight Georges St-Pierre or up to meet Jon Jones . With Silva’s recent loss, those discussions have cooled, but if UFC flyweight title holder Demetrious Johnson has his way, that talk may start centering around the sport’s lighter divisions. Right now my focus is John Moraga ,” Johnson told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “But I think if everything goes well with this fight and I tackle this challenge and come out victorious, everybody is talking about the superfights and middleweight with Anderson Silva and Jon Jones and ‘GSP.’ I think there are superfights to be had in the flyweight division and bantamweight division.” Johnson, of course, used to compete in the UFC’s bantamweight division and even competed once for the title in that weight class, though he ended up losing a unanimous decision to current champ Dominick Cruz . But when the UFC added the 125-pound division, “Mighty Mouse” dropped to flyweight and claimed the promotion’s first title in that division. On Saturday night, Johnson (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) meets Moraga (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in the main event of UFC on FOX 8, which takes place at Seattle’s KeyArena and airs on FOX. According to oddsmakers, Johnson is as much as a 5-to-1 favorite to retain his title, which would mark the second consecutive defense of his belt.

Undefeated heavyweight Daniel Cormier has talked about making the move to the 205-pound division well before he even arrived in the UFC . Following his final Strikeforce bout on Jan. 12, the former Olympian said he planned to drop to the light heavyweight division by the end of 2013 and kick Jon Jones ’ (expletive). During a recent episode of UFC Tonight , it was revealed that Cormier’s UFC 166 match-up with Roy Nelson would be his final fight in the heavyweight division and he plans to ask for an immediate title shot in the 205-pound weight class if he’s victorious on Oct.
