UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman was able to do what no other 185-pound fighter could before him, hand former titleholder Anderson Silva his first UFC loss in seven years of competition when the two fought at UFC 162 on July 6. The 29-year-old New Yorker secured an early takedown in the title fight. He attempted two submissions and knocked out the greatest of all time with a left hook in the second frame. It was an amazing feat, but made more incredible by Weidman not being in top form for the fight. “I think I went out there and worked hard and went for everything that I felt. She is looking to earn her third straight pro victory at Friday’s Legacy FC 23 show in San Antonio. According to Granados, the transition from amateur to pro has gone smoothly and has only required a few tweaks to her game. “Other than the nerves, it wasn’t any different,” she said.

Lyoto Machida Hopes a Win Over Phil Davis at UFC 163 Finally Earns Him a Title Shot

Former UFC light heavyweight titleholder Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida is the highest ranked 205-pound fighter on the UFC roster behind champion Jon Jones . He was defeated by Jones at UFC 140 by submission and hasn’t yet been able to work his way back to a title fight. When a knee injury forced Dan Henderson out of the UFC 151 title fight with Jones, Machida was given the opportunity to step in as Henderson’s replacement, but declined, citing a lack of proper time to prepare. When he faced Henderson at UFC 157, the match-up was billed as a top contender’s bout, but, although Machida defeated Henderson, Alexander Gustafsson will face Jones at UFC 165 in September, instead. Machida takes on top-ten ranked Phil Davis at UFC 163 on Saturday and hopes to show he’s ready for a rematch with Jones. “I was a bit frustrated because it was the second time that I get this opportunity and I wasn’t given the opportunity to go for the title bout, so this Saturday I would like to gratify that I am, in fact, ready to go after the title,” said Machida during the UFC 163 pre-fight press conference in Brazil on Thursday.

Georges St-Pierre: Despite loss, Anderson Silva still MMA’s pound-for-pound best

LOS ANGELES – Georges St-Pierre knows something about upset losses, which is why he may be a little more forgiving than most when it comes to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva ‘s first UFC defeat. St-Pierre (24-2 MMA, 18-2 UFC), who holds the UFC’s welterweight title and fights Johny Hendricks (15-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) at UFC 167 on Nov. 16, said that despite Silva’s UFC 162 title loss to Chris Weidman earlier this month, he still considers the Brazilian to be MMA’s best pound-for-pound fighter. “I still believe Anderson Silva is the best in the world, pound for pound,” said St-Pierre, who was in Los Angeles as part of this week’s UFC World Tour of fan and media events. “Even though he (made) a mistake and got beat by Chris Weidman, I believe it was a style matchup, and he got caught. I believe he’s still the best in the world, but even the best can lose sometimes.” St-Pierre, who occasionally trains with Weidman, said he considers him a friend. He also expected Weidman (10-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) to pull off the victory, which came via second-round TKO after Silva (33-5 MMA, 16-1 UFC) dropped his hands and continually taunted the wrestler. But the upset, which snapped Silva’s 16-fight UFC winning streak, also served as a warning to St-Pierre, who’s won 11 consecutive fights since his own shocking upset to Matt Serra in 2007

The buzz seems to be that Weidman (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) has a better shot than just about anyone before him of knocking off Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC), who long has been considered the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter. Now hear what the fighters themselves think about that possibility. Silva defends his middleweight title against Weidman in the main event of UFC 162, which takes place July 6 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Silva will be going after an extension of his record, looking for his 11th straight title defense and 17th straight UFC victory. Weidman has earned his shot by being unbeaten in the UFC, himself. Silva opened as slightly more than a 2-to-1 favorite (-215) against Weidman.
